Paying off auto loan vs. leaving a little balance

I had AmeriCredit and called them to ask this. I had the loan almost paid off by 3 years. They counted mine as pre-paid payments. So I was never counted as late. But then I realized how much interest it was still costing me and and just paid if off. But then; I still have student loan as an installment.
