Newly discharged and have some questions

So I have been trolling this board for the last few weeks now and finally joined to get my FICO score.  We filed bankruptcy 06/11/15 and it was discharged 09/16/15.

I have been approved for a Cap One Platinum ($300) and Cap One QS ($500) however I am having a hard time trying to get that all important (or so it seems) 3rd card.  I applied at Credit One, NFCU and Barclays but was declined at all 3 though I did write a follow up message to NFCU and am waiting to hear back.  Any advise on what I should do?  Should I wait it out for a few months and try again or is there a better option.  I do NOT want a secured card and preferrable no installment loan until I am ready to buy another car in about a year or so.  Thoughts?

Starting Scores (9/19): EQ - 474/TU - 528/EX - 502
Current Scores (09/22): EQ - 617- TU - 638/EX - 647
Comenity M/C - $6730.00, BJs Perks MC - $2800.00, Credit One - $1200.00, Credit One - $800.00, NFCU -$6300.00, Care Credit - $5000.00, William Sonoma - $3500.00, Overstock - $4100.00, Pottery Barn - $2000.00>

Re: Newly discharged and have some questions

I understand you don't 'want' a secured card, but sometimes that is the best option. A secured card is definitely better than CreditOne or some of the other predatory cards that are out there.

I would recommend going with an OpenSky secured card. They don't pull credit at all, report quickly to the CRAs and only requires a $200 deposit and only a $29 annual fee. It also reports like any other unsecured credit card.

Good luck with your rebuild journey.

First of all, welcome to myFICO! Glad you finally decided to join Smiley Happy

The 3rd card is important but you don't need it asap.. You can use the cards you have now for 6 months and try again. Let's hope NFCU comes through with a small approval for you.

Re: Newly discharged and have some questions

I'll disagree and say to avoid Credit One like the plague. Which NFCU credit card did you apply for? I recommend their secured nRewards. You want your foot in the door with NFCU, even if it's a secured card. They will unsecure later and the sky is the limit with them.

I agree Smiley Happy If you are itching to get the 3rd card right away I would go with the secured nRewards from NFCU. It doesn't report as secured and can graduate on the 13th statement.

Still crossing my fingers for a successful recon though Smiley Very Happy

OMG!  The recon at NFCU worked!  I've been approved for their nRewards card, unsecured with a limit of $500.00!  I now have my 3rd card and can happily retreat to my garden for the next 6mos to a year!  Would never had know I could do this without this forum! Smiley Very Happy

If you are trying to rebuild, I say go for Capital One in a few weeks once your BK has reported.  They are BK friendly as long as you haven't burned them.  Good luck.  I have been waiting for this for years and finally feel like I can start to breath a little again!
