Closed my AMEX Business Platinum

I posted last year about getting an unusually-high >targeted SUB for 250K MRs on Business Platinum<.  Normally, I wouldn't have even considered the card, but the offer was "too good to refuse."   My application was >approved on 10/04/24< and I met the SUB requirements.  After that, honestly the card got little use.  I thought I might take advantage of some of the credits or the Centurion Lounge access, but I ended up never being in the right place-right time to need their lounge access.  The AF $695 renewed and was deducted in full from my bank account prior to today's due date.  I called today and went through the cancellation process.  Of course, the rep tried to go over the benefits of keeping the card, thanked me for my long membership with them, and suggested a down-grade to a lower-fee card.  I listened patiently and also asked about a retention offer.  They had one, but it was not enough to offset enough of the fee, just 10K MRs for $5K spend in three months.  I cancelled the card and since it was within 30 days of renewal, the full AF should be credited back to me.

Of course, I have my Blue Business Plus so I will get to keep my MRs earned, which is always an important consideration before closing an MR-earning card if you haven't used all your points.

Down-grading wasn't a viable option, IMO.  I'd be missing out on a SUB on the new card, and AMEX approvals for existing cardholders are often only a soft-pull.

The Platinum is a cool card, but that hefty AF on either the personal or business version just isn't a good fit for many of us.  And as I've posted before, I dislike the way that AMEX plays the coupon-book game on so many cards and then also changes the rules every few years.  The combination makes it difficult to commit to keeping any of their AF cards for the long-term without constant reevaluation.

with the new AF, hard to see Biz Plat as a keeper card, IMO

if you do want to play again though, I would be monumentally surprised if you didn't have an offer something like this somewhere in your online acount:

the offers in your account should be NLL, so you should be able to earn another bonus

Thanks for that tip, @GZG.  AMEX is crazy like that.  I got a 2nd SUB on a 2nd Blue Business Plus last year even though the original card was still open!  And during this past year, AMEX mailed me offers for the Business Platinum, even though I held it already.  I didn't follow through, mainly because I wasn't sure if they would pay out another SUB and the offers weren't as good as the 250K MR offer I had received.

Yea the Amex Platinum is a difficult card to appreciate in my opinion. It seems to just be marketed to look like a prestigious, high value card. It also seems like it forces manufactured spending just to get your points worth. I get offers for that card all the time, and even if it didn't have an AF, I still don't think I would want it.

Re: Closed my AMEX Business Platinum

Got the schwab personal plat and going to close my biz plat next year too.  The business plat credits just aren't that good anymore now that the dell credit has been reduced and the fee has gone up.  I don't stay at hiltons often enough to use all 4 of those $50, the abobe and indeed are always useless to me.  They should have added Resy or something like that and then maybe I'd keep it.

Did the same today and quite easily with that ridiculously bad retention offer

I feel the same way about the personal Platinum card. Good for the bonus, but having to claw your way to break even every year with piecemeal credits and discounts is tough.
