Amex reallocated a card limit on my Amex BCP to ED card without asking me after my last failed attempt on ED CLI.I woke up this morning and found the message on my e-mail. However, Amex gives me 45 days to reverse the situation. So BCP 19,800->15,9800. ED 2400 -> 6400. I guess, Amex doesn't like any of my CLI attempts for years. It took more than 6 years to reach $19,800 for BCP before it is being bucket. 3X CLI formula doesn't work for me for any of the card. I guess I was right regarding Amex why ED and Delta Gold why they always fail at CLI because of a large limit on BCP. Maybe I should move ED and DG card limit to BCP instead and cancel both ED and Delta Gold.
I was working on ED and DG CLI for years but always fail. However, I was granted my first CLI for $400 for ED after 3 years plus last March. The method of spending close to credit limit and PIF do not seem to work on both ED and DG even for months. I used to fly annually using DG card but I guess that card is useless to me now except being pretty. Maybe it is time to move on from Amex.
...... and... make a come back later by applying it after more than 90 days!
So any bad experience with Amex so far? My scores currently are all 800s with Experian is not being updated yet by Amex.

Are you quite sure there wasn't any verbiage about this possibility? I know some banks use that policy when you apply for a new card, i.e., if you have an existing card(s) they can take some of its limit and move it to your new card. But that's all clearly spelled out during the application process. I can't recall one way or the other if Amex says that during a CLI request, so I'm just tossing this out as a possibility. It's unusual for banks to do something of that magnitude without any warning. But at least you can undo it if you want.

It sounds like you're potentially at ceiling exposure if they keep doing this.
AmEx is not "limitless" when it comes to CLIs. Yes, they have the appeal of low hanging fruit for lots of folks because of the attractiveness of the 3x potential, but AmEx can reach a ceiling with CLIs and new applications if you're topped out based on income, internal AmEx guidelines, overall exposure relative to your reported income and other factors. It's not just based on your EX score (even if over 800) or how much you've cycled. So, even 90 days from now may not make much of a difference if you apply because they could still potentially reallocate limits again🤷♂️
That said, if you're not using any specific cards, then you could reallocate the limits and perhaps consider closing them.

Hi. I didn't ask for reallocation. It was done automatically without my request so it is kind of weird. At least I could revert it back within 45 days. I think I am going to spend some more on ED and PIF before the next monthly statement. Last month I spent around 94% of the credit limit and PIF with $0.04 statement balance . Currently I am alrady slightly above 50% credit utilization based on $2400 and not the new $6400. Anyway, I am going to revert it back before 45 days later.

Yeah. Sad facts. .. I am planning to close them out and only use my Gold and BCP cards only in the future. It is like a gamble. Some people got lucky to have better SL after they cancelled and reapply if they are not being denied. I guess it is a hit and miss gamble.
I just chat with Amex to revert back the credit limit but after > 40 mins, I was told she couldn't do it and she gave me a phone number to call. I called that number. After a security check and I explained my issue that reallocation of credit was done without my permission, she said she would look it up. After 5 minutes, she hanged up on me. Ehm. Not to sound paranoid but I feel like they already know I am planning to close out two amex cards but they wouldn't let me.
I think they are making it easier for me to close out all amex accounts.
That was unhappy comment from me just now
Update: I called in again. The phone given to me was a phone number for CLI 800-576-8942 not customer service which includes credit reallocation service. Anyway, I not only reallocated back the credit but also move extra $700 from ED to BCP. I asked if I could move some more credits from credit cards I want to close to BCP in the future, and the rep said yes. However, I have to keep each card at least $1000. So next time before closing out ED and DG, I move those credits to BCP which would be $22,200 from $19,800.

There is a clause of the AENB cardmember agreement that explicitly states they can "increase or reduce the credit limits" at their sole discretion, which means they don't need permission from the accountholder to do so, especially if you have multiple revolving accounts with them.
Obviously, their sandbox their rules. FWIW, there's been other members who have been successful in reaching out to AENB and placing things back the way they were. Or, you can use the self-service tool online and transfer the limit yourself if you wish (1 reallocation per month).
Hi @FinStar , thank you for the tip. I didn't know they have the tool online to move it yourself. I will check it out and you can only use it once per month. That's great to know. Thank you.

You're welcome @Anonymous
I see you updated your post upthread and glad to hear they were able to resolve the issue with restoring things the way they were. And, yes you can use that tool 1x per month on any reallocations. So, choose one card (per month) until you can get the desired CL on the card you intend to keep, rinse and repeat. Then, you can entertain closing the cards you no longer wish to keep.
