Amex Referral issue

Hi All,

I have the amex gold and I referred one of my friend. They selected and applied for Cash Magnet and it was approved but in the login it is showing as Gold. Is it because I referred from gold it is showing like this and will update later or is that an issue and they actualy got approved for Gold?

If it is gold card, what are their options? Can we just cancel and apply for CM? Will they correct it? I have asked them to call amex but I'm not really sure what else We can do..

Re: Amex Referral issue

If they clicked the link you sent they got a gold. They most definitely don't want to close it for at least a year. Doing so may get them blacklisted from additional approvals or SUBs.

Since underwriting and type of card is different for CM, they won't be able to product change it. They would have to apply for the CM outright if that's what they want, but they'll be stuck with the gold also.

If it doesn't make financial sense to keep the gold, they could try and call in explaining the situation while closing it, but the computer won't care about the circumstances the next time they app. It'll just see the card was closed before the first year. Now, I have seen people close a card immediately and not get any kind of blacklist so there may be a small window for cards opened erroneously, but we don't have any datapoints for that, that I'm aware of.

@Trini88 you can change the card being referred.

1. Get Your referral link.

2. Click on it.

3. Change the card to apply for.

4. Copy that address and send it.

It's been a while so I might be missing a step. Also don't remember how it changes what you'll receive.

Yes they clicked in the link but if we navigate down, we see options to select from the list of all personal cards and I did confirm it with amex that it will still be counted as referral. We are so sure they clicked on the CM.. They spoke to amex and the CSR suggested canceling the card and applying for CM. And they did cancel but did not apply for CM yet. And he put in a ticket for this to be investigated and said they will get back in couple of days.

Gold does not justify financially for them, this is their first credit card and not much grocery/restaurant spend.
