Applied for Chase SW Plus, confusion ensues

I applied for a Chase SW Plus credit card over a month ago, I had been denied and through reading the forums had called the recon line to try and reach an approval.

I spoke to a gentleman and after about 30 minutes he said they needed to verify my address but he put in a recommendation for approval. After a month of attempting to fax over information this morning I went to a chase branch and they set up a profile with my verification. I then called an hour later and spoke to a gentleman who’d I assume was of Indian descent, he was very short with me the entire conversation and informed me my credit application has been denied. In asking him about the original recommendation he had no answer. When I asked to speak with someone else he just sent me back through the automated line.

In reaching someone else on the automated line they said there’s no way around his denial and the original specialist shouldn’t have guaranteed me approval which he had at the time. So do I just give up now or is there another avenue I can take?

Re: Applied for Chase SW Plus, confusion ensues

Well, typically it's 30 days before the HP expires for an approval.

If you really want the card then keep pushing them since it's just hanging in the system for address verfication which I assume the BRANCH verfified when setting up your online access.

I would look in the backdoor #'s instead of trying to push through the automated system.  Direct dialing usually works better than dealing with the gatekeepers.

Re: Applied for Chase SW Plus, confusion ensues

After the gentleman declined me the first time, I did end up calling the same line and a specialist was the one who told me they couldn’t reverse the decision. He asked if I wanted to try another recon with him and after all was said and done he said he as well declined it (I’m sure after venting to him briefly before the 2nd recon of the day; he just wasn’t having any of it). I just don’t understand how one can say you’re practically approved and he put his recommendation in, then speak to someone whom obviously wasn’t the friendliest declined it after the countless hours of trouble I went through in faxing over documents numerous times. Upwards of 10 calls checking on the status and finally driving 100 miles out of my way to go to a Chase branch to hand them the documents. Do I just quit now and consider it a loss or do I chase after them and go for a 3rd recon of the day, knowing probably that anyone I vent to is going to go into it with a sour taste in their mouth and also not wanting to overturn a colleagues decision. Making them look like an idiot.

Re: Applied for Chase SW Plus, confusion ensues

Maybe take another approach.

Talk to the rep about what has happened so far w/ just the facts of you applied, denied, sent the paperwork, and would like to see if it can be reconsidered or if not then ask to speak with a senior analyst or supervisor about it.

Frustration doesn't garner sympathy usuallhy with an average rep.  It doesn't have to be a long drawn out process to get them to do something.  Just stay to the point with them and if you don't like their in/action then ask for an escalation.  Last resort is contact the Executive Offices about the issue and see if you can pull at their strings a bit for an overide of the decline.

After every option is exhausted then it's time to move on and try again later down the road.  I've loved SW for flights but, the card doesn't make sense to me when you can use UR's from other cards and transfer them over through the Chase portal.  You can also accrue points through their rewards dining program where you just link your cards to that system and when you eat out you get the points for the dine.

The only time the card from SWA really becomes beneficial is to nail down the companion pass for no fee rather than hitting 100K points in a year to qualify for one.

Re: Applied for Chase SW Plus, confusion ensues

Hi @Anonymous, welcome to the forums.

Sorry to hear about the long drawn-out process. Based on the initial information you provided, it is fairly possible that the recommendation for approval didn't take. Sometimes first level UW analysts may make some of those recommendations for a senior UW to review it, but it's not a guaranteed set in-stone approval. It's usually standard protocol to verify the other pertinent information to continue the review process, but it really depends on where the application pended during the request for the additional information or if a senior UW simply re-reviewed the application and had everything they needed and it was still declined.

If the application has gone through the entire review cycle and it's locked then it won't be able to get overturned, unfortunately.

Out of curiosity, what was the initial reason they cited for the denial before you called the reconsideration line? Did you receive the letter that matched those reasons?

Re: Applied for Chase SW Plus, confusion ensues

Thank you Finstar, been lurking for about a year. Decided this calamity was the perfect time to come out of the dark.

My denial was for a baddie I have on file with Verizon. As my ex was on my cellphone plan and defaulted on a payment that escalated to $995 in collections before I recognized it. I’m now working on a resolution to that collection. That and my credit history is only about 8 months deep. I had decided against credit cards my whole life as I saw no need for loans.

I brought all of that up to the original specialist whom went through my whole credit history and asked me questions about my baddie and limited credit history. About 45 minutes through the call he told me he needed to verify my address but had put a recommendation for approval in. When I stated what that meant he said that nothing was official but I would most likely get approved. If he told me that there was even a remote chance I’d get declined, I wouldn’t have gone through all the trouble to acquire the card.

Re: Applied for Chase SW Plus, confusion ensues

as @FinStar echoed a recommended for approval means it it put in front of a senior UW that makes the decision and most likely the senior uw decided against it.  When I was rebuilding years ago I was recommened for a card at one point as well just like you and a few hours later it was reviewed by a senior UW and the decision stood as a denial.

What I would do if I were you is pay off the verizon collection as usually they won't goodwill at all as that shows Chase you take care of your debts even if it was your ex that caused it, you are liable for it and let your credit age for awhile longer say to a year then re-apply..  Keep in mind not to go past 5/24 rule or you will surely get denied if you cross that barrier in the future in all reality that is only 4 more months then try again, but once again try to take care of that collection being either a PFD or just paying it as that will go a LONG way with showing you are responsible to Chase and took care of the debt.

Best of luck.

Re: Applied for Chase SW Plus, confusion ensues

Ok that background is very helpful. Typically, if an application is recommended for an approval where only ID verification is required (ss# card, DL, utility statements, etc.) then those tend to yield better results (provided the required documents meet their needs) because that's usually what's holding the next step in the approval process.

Since your application was originally declined for credit reasons, then it takes a very different process to reach the overturning of the whole decision. Some are successful some are not. It appears the initial analyst you spoke to may have overpromised and underdelivered, unfortunately. On these kind of reconsideration instances while the analyst felt you were likely a *good* candidate, it's really up to the senior UW team to make the ultimate decision.

Hopefully you can make headway with the Verizon collection or you can check out the Rebuilding Your Credit section of the forums to gain any tips or options that may be available with resolving that baddie.

ETA - and what @CreditCuriosity mentioned above my post 😁

Wait 6 months and try again

Chase likes to see min 1 year credit history. You have only 8 months and you have defaulted on a $1k phone.  Im surprised that you werent an instant denial  Go to the garden and clear up the baddie and youll have no problems next time around.
