hello everyone.
it has been months since i've been on the forums. feels good to be back.
i was looking to get the chase sapphire reserve but saw that the preferred is offering 60k points for $4k spending in 3 months and the reserve has 50k points with the same amount spent.
i'm currently at the 4/24 mark with one of them being a chase freedom. the sapphire will make me at 5/24.
was wondering if it'll be possible to upgrade the preferred to the reserve once i hit the spending bonus if i'm at 5/24 or do i have to wait?
thanks in advance for all the help.
You would have to wait until 1 year anniversary. A stipulation on cards with AF in Credit Card Act.

Due to the CARD Act regulations, you cannot upgrade the Preferred to the Reserve until the one year anniversary of the Preferred. Essentially the CARD Act prevents a credit card to increase the annual fee on you in the first year--this even applies to product changes.

You need to wait a year and then request for a product change. I would additionally ask around your family\friend network to see if one of them can get you a referral link. Might as well help someone out with some points.
From what I understand the sub is equal on these two cards. Csp 60000 x 1.25= 750$. Csr 50000 x 1.50= 750$. Maybe I'm wrong. But I could have sworn I read this somewhere. If it's true and you really want the csr, I say to for that card.
Just to add...not only do you have to wait a year to PC, you also can't earn more than 1 Sapphire Card Bonus in...I think I read....every 24 or 36 months. So if you get one, you can't get another with a SUB for that predetermined time. Sorry I can't recall the exact date but it's a couple years.

It's 48 months. 😊

^ ^ ^ This is TRUE. The SUBs are effectively equal if you redeem them for maximum value on travel, since the CSP only gets a 25% bonus to the 50% bonus of the CSR. The SUB on CSP is higher (IF) you just plan to cash it out and run, but that's not the best use of the points. Plus, both cards are worth keeping for the long-run, way beyond the SUB.
Between the CSP and CSR, while it sounds like the AF is sooooo much higher on the CSR, do your own math. For many people, the difference is actually very small in practice by the time you take advantage of credits and other benefits. IMO, the CSR is the better way to go more often than not.
CSR offers: $300 travel credit that is easily and automatically applied. $60 Door Dash credits in 2020 and 2021. TSA Global Entry Credit. The Roadside Assistance with CSR is not only to call for help (CSP) but also pays up to $50 4x per year, equivalent to basic AAA plan costing about $55 AF. Priority Pass lounges. Much better travel protections*. And 50% bonus redemption in UR travel instead of 25%.

This is my issue. Right now, I don't travel enough to make it worth it. However, as my daughter gets older (she'll be 2 in December), I anticipate my family upping its vacation game. I'll definitely have to reevaluate the CSR in a couple years. By that time I can snag another SUB as well.
