Hi Forum,
I am thinking about applying for a Citi Costco Visa because all of my credit cards are Mastercard and my Discover. I only have one Visa and that's Merrick Bank but it's in my sock drawer. I just got an auto loan last month and my Discover CC in. July and a PR with my credit union. I applied for a Citi DC back in July and was denied for too many inquiries. I called to recon and she told me to get an inquiry off then call back. Well I did have one to drop off in Aug, so I called back and the rep put me on hold and came back and said wait 60 days from when I applied and don't get any inquiries and it should go through. I have another inquiry falling off next month and I'm just wondering should I wait until then to apply for Costco Visa? Also, does having the new auto loan and 2 new credit cards hurt my chances for the Costco card? Last time they pulled EX and I am 4/6, 5/12, 1/24. I just don't want them to HP and I get denied again. Any advice??
My FICO 8: EQ: 705, TU: 718, EX: 704. 6% Utilization.
Update: Applied and was denied again. Pulled EX. That is it for me until Spring/Summer next yr. Wasted a HP. Dropped my score 10 points!!!!! What happened to two points!! I need a really good Visa card. Guess that won't be happening anytime soon.
Sorry OP for the denial but you must remember, "patience is a virtue." You asked for our opinion, and before you got even one response, you steamrolled ahead and applied. 😳
My response would have been to hold off--not only because you have 4 inquiries in the last 6 months, but to say, IME, "denials begat denials."
I suggest you not apply for any more CCs until those inquiries are at a minimum 1 year old. Even 18 months would be ideal.
Also, and this is IMHO, you don't NEED a Visa, you WANT a Visa--big difference 😁.
Gardening will be good. GL2U.
Hi there!! Thank you on advice. I actually searched the topic before I applied. I looked at almost a hundred different scenarios on this forum and based on the different results, I decided to go for it. The reason I say I need a Visa is because I just found out that Costco only use Visa when I tried to get gas and realized all I had was MC and Discover. That's the only reason. It's ok though. Discover and my credit union credit card will be enough for now. I got my new Mercedes GLC and my Discover 7k CL (which I was denied at first but got it a month later), so I am content. Thank you for the sound advice! I will garden for 18 months or more.

From my understanding there is a work around for using non-Visa at Costco. Last I heard, you can use any network card at online at Costco and buy Costco gift cards to use at the gas pumps/in store
I have never personally tried this but have read that it works.
That's good to know!! I had no idea. I am new to Costco. I normally shop at Sam's, but they just put a Costco in my area and I like some of their options better. I will just continue to go to Sam's for gas. Costco premium gas option is cheaper by a few cents, but definitely not worth me getting a HP inquiry and denial. Lol!!! Lesson learned.
Sidenote but Costco accepts MasterCard. This was at our store with the Capital One MasterCard debit card.
Maybe it's only Visa credit cards?

I didn't even know this. I've been a Costco member for years and just assumed Visa was a given for both CC's and Debit. I know some banks out there offer 1% Cashback Debit cards, so that means a MC version debit card could still net some cashback at Costco.....very interesting.
I have a 1% Debit card with Affinity, but it's also a Visa, as an added note.

I didn't know either until I tried to use there once with my Discover card because it was 5% at wholesale clubs.
After the cashier said no Discover, I ended up grabbing the capital one debit card without even thinking and later realized "wait this isn't a Visa card either?"
Credit Vs Debit must be the difference.
Costco accepts debt cards of any kind but you must put in your pin. (Can't run it as credit)
Thank you for the info!! I will just use my debit card instead of credit card.
