Re: Credit building newbie: Graduating a secured credit card and trying to choose a 2nd+ credit card

New updates:

  • I have been approved for Amex Magnet Cash, $2,000 CL! :-) This on top of being approved for Discover it, $1,750 CL, and rejected for Chase Freedom Unlimited.
  • My EX FICO 8 decreased 16 points with today's 3 HPs, from 750 to 734.

So once again, just want to get people's feedback in my series of questions:

6. What should be my next steps?

I think I'll wait a month to (a) fully graduate my secured TD Bank Cash Rewards CC, (b) get CLI for it, and (c) activate my new Discover CC & Amex CC before applying for a 3rd CC.

Are you under chases 5/24 rule? If you really want to get you foot in the door with chase I've heard people getting approved for a chase slate card after being denied the freedom and then you can product change it down the road to a freedom .... If it hasn't been 24 hours applying for the chase slate should use the same HP .....

@yes, I am under Chase's 5/24 rule. I think next month I'm gonna re-apply for Chase Freedom Unlimited rather than apply for Chase Slate, because from my reconsideration call with Chase, it seems they only rejected me because of my thin credit report:

  • My credit report when I applied to Chase this month: 750 EX FICO 8 score, 1 secured CC (TD Bank), overall CL $1,500, age of oldest credit 8 months, AAoA 8 months
  • My credit report when I apply for Chase next month: 734 EX FICO 8 score (or higher by then), 3 non-secured CCs (TD Bank, Discover, Amex), overall CL $5,250 (or higher by then if I get CLI from TD Bank), age of oldest credit 9 months, AAoA 3.6 months

Does this make sense?

In my opinion, for best chances of approval, you might want to wait until your oldest is at least a full year.

Noted, thank you!

I will wait to see my scores in September (after my current CC graduates, and my 2 newly approved CCs activate) and then decide how soon I want to try a new app with Chase. Smiley Happy
