I'm bummed about my latest denials. I've been gardening since August when I got my QS VISA and my Barclay card. I stepped out hoping for more credit. I received the Venture, and nothing else :-( I applied for the Discover IT against my fellow FICOers judgement. I also applied for the NASA after my bank account approval last week. I've heard neither of these companies are good with Recon.
TU 682, EQ 685 EXP 679. 2 Years post bankruptcy, no more lates on my CR, 19% utilization which is pretty much all on my Venture One til May when interest goes up. I really want one more card, but I feel like the only one that likes me is Cap1 lol. I now have four Cap1, 2 Comenity, 1 Synchrony, 1 Barclay. I would love another Barclay, but I'm afraid they won't like my inquries, plus no pre-approval. Chase said no a couple months ago because of BK, DS no because of Bk. I don't know who else is available, and I certainly don't want to waste another hard inquiry. I was thinking about possibly Wells Fargo, but I don't know how they feel about BK, plus I burned them in my BK. I do have a car loan with them though perfect payment history. I would love one more yes and then back to the garden. We'll see..
I'm interested in what pizza1 has to say, because I think that your biggest drawback is your bk. It is going to have a big effect for a long time. If you burned WF, I wouldn't apply for them for at least another 3 years. As to Discover, your file is getting thicker (which Discover generally doesn't like) and you still have a recent BK, as well as a few inqs. As much as you don't want to hear it, you have 8 new accounts and probably just need to garden for a bit longer. At least you have a good gen spend card in the QS, and another in the Venture. However, I don't know why you would want both.
The other issue is that you might have had more success if you did IT first, and Venture second. Try to evaluate which cards you think are most beneficial for you and app based on that wish list.
I guess you have to garden some more :[ I usually do 6 months to 1 year at a time (IMO 5 months is not enough).
Sorry... If you app to soon, denials are common and you just have to shrug them off. Those HP's are the real pain though.
Next time!

The reason why I want another card now is because I am on a waiting list for a USDA mortgage. They told me that the waiting list is roughly 1.5 years long. I don't want to have new applications on my file before the mortgage so basically its now or in 2 years that I can apply for credit cards. I was really hoping for a good cash back card with rotating categories possibly. More than 3%. I don't know if Discover does very well with recons, but I guess it wouldn't hurt to try :-) Anyone ever recon with NASA?
IMHO the 2 years of gardening will do you good
No INQ's left and a well aged BK and good payment history
FYI denials aren't stupid just a way of telling you what you need to work on for future better results is how I see them

+1
Your denial essentially tells you what you should do right now..... Garden. Especially with a mortgage coming up.

ok..first, you cant compare your profile to anyones elses, especially mine, or CA's, or anyone else that has done really well with a BK. Yes, your scores are decent 2 yrs post BK, BUT....you had a BK! You have to face the fact that youre a risk, and will be for a long time. Just because your scores are decent you cant think that youll be approved for anything and everything. NOT. GONNA. HAPPEN.
Though I have been very successful since my DC as well, my success lies in store cards, not majors, and youll run into the same issue. Its just something we have to face, ESPECIALLY if you burned a certain lender. So...lets address the "denials are stupid". Are they really stupid? No...Like MJ stated, denials are for a reason, plain and simple, and youre not gonna be approved for certain cards or by certain lenders for a very long time. Chase, Citi, Amex, even WF. Doesnt matter that you have a car loan with perfect payment history with them...youre a risk, and will continue to be.
Im a risk!! Anyone with a BK is a risk!...period. Denials are there to help us...when I went on my spree last year, and I started getting denials...I knew right then to stop , slam on the brakes and garden for at least 2 yrs min! All I was doing was huring my scores and profile more by racking up denial INQ, which is what youre doing.
Lets talk the mortgage thing here too while we are at it......why do you want to get "just one more card" before you try to get a home loan? Thats actually NOT the way to do it. Most lenders like to see 6 mo min of NO INQ and NO new accts before trying to seek out a mortgage. You cant compare your success/non-success to others in your same situation, because youll be disappointed.
Lets tackle Discover and Nasa too....In general they arent BK friendly, and there is NO recon. I mean you can, but it wont be successful 98% of the time. Heck, even CA with his LONG history of credit, and excellent income, etccc...still gets denied for Discover. Yes, I was lucky, I got them 1.5 yrs post, but I never had Discover in my life, they werent IIB, and there must have been something they liked about me even though I have a BK showing. I have no answers for that, I also was approved on my 5th try with them, LOL..
My advice is this right now, and Im just one persons opinion, but Id garden till after you closed on your new home in a couple years, and you might be surprised at what opens up credit wise at the 4 yr mark post DC...
Also, no reason to be bummed because you cant get the cards you want after having a BK, and including certain lenders. Im not upset that Chase wont let me back in after they were IIB, I completely understand, and Id decline my app too! For people that have a BK, time is our friend, and theres nothing we can do about it except wait it out. Im an impatient person too, but Im learning to be disiplined right now, because I have to be. Also, get that util down to less than 9%. Youre already a risk with the BK, and applying for CC's with that util is even risker looking. People mock me sometimes for always keeping a 1% util reporting on one card at all times, but Ill tell ya....Its worked for me, and I continue to get CLI's, and CC's, so take it for what its worth. The last thing a lender wants to see on someones profile who is a recent BK (and yes, 2 yrs post is recent), is high util. To them, thats just asking for trouble again.
Sit tight and garden for 2 yrs, and I think youll be pleasantly surprised at what opens up for you. If I hadnt gone on my crazy spree last year(and it was crazy, people her can vouch for that for me)...my scores would be well over 700 right now, probably in the 720 range across the board. and just remember, you cant see someone else with an approval from WF or Chase or Amex with a BK, and think youll get it too, because everyones profile is different, and income, and you dont know their situaiton. Hang in there!
