In the middle of my credit rebuild journey, I was approved for a Discover card with a SL of $750. Since then, I have added several great cards with better starting limits (the best of which was the Navy Flagship with a SL of $25,000 and is now up to $28,000). As for Discover, I started hitting the CLI button monthly after the third statement. Always denied, always due to insufficient experience with the credit limit. I just passed 6 statements. Still denied. In about 5 days I expect I'll get the same old letter with the same old reason. My scores are all around 700-705. I'm assuming it's a tightening up by Discover because of Covid. Just frustrating. I think I'll use it some for the 5% on Amazon for the next three months and then otherwise put it in the sock drawer and let it age.

First day of the 13th month. Until then, you're going to keep getting the same denial.

This isn't necessarily true. I just hit my 13th month. It was the day after my statement posted so it's a bit longer than 1st day. I received plenty of CLI increases prior (last in March). Discover and many lenders have tightened up during the pandemic and the economic uncertainty that comes with it.

They're talking about how there are recent reports that Discover will not entertain a CLI currently until you've had the card for 1 year.

Yet I have seen recent reports of CLIs before the first year and denials as well. I am adding in the data point that I did not get a CLI after my 13th month.

Re: Discover CLI denial (again)

Per a Discover CSR, in April of this year, the company put a system lock in place preventing any CLI's on accounts open less than 12 full billing cycles.

Makes a lot of sense with the current pandemic and on impending double dip recession!

Re: Discover CLI denial (again)

How do I meassure full billing cycles? I opened my Discover Sept - 8, 2019 and have 12 statements.

I opened mine Aug 8, 2019. The first day the system allowed me to complete a CLI request was Sep 8.

Re: Discover CLI denial (again)

It’s possible they have tightened up with their

CLIs and more specifically new accounts being able to get an increase but reminder they’ve always been kind of all over the road map with their increases.

Usage doesn’t help with getting increases either.

My suggestion is to put very small purchases on it to keep it open and active and when you’ve approached the year mark start checking their sites for pre approvals.

Chances are you’ll be approved under better terms and may be able to combine the two limits to one card (assuming they still allow that at the time) plus a new card would be another year 5% cash back match (assuming you have that card)

Coincidentally, according to my notes, I opened mine on the same day, and the system allowed me to request one on September 1st.

Hey Gator, sorry to hear it.  I've been trying since my 3rd statement cut back in June. Usually try a few days after each cut. A big no for me as well.

Hang tight and keep the faith, we'll get em eventually! Lol

Re: Discover CLI denial (again)

Do you prepay your card before the statement?

Because I got denied for "not using my card enough" and the person I spoke with said they only look at the statement balance to see how much use you're getting. They don't take into account anything if you prepay it down before the statement.
