Denied for Discover IT but counter offered the secured version. Was pretty sure of the outcome before applying but gave it a shot anyway. Got the 7-10 message, called in to recon and the reason for the denial was lack of history(aaoa 3m). The credit analyst told me that there was nothing she could do to change decision.
I applied for the Discover IT student at the end of October. I was declined and counter offered the secured. I didn't accept the secured invite immediately and for some reason, even though it said it saved it to my social security # somewhere, I couldn't pull it back up on the screen. Days later I decided to accept the offer for a secured card but wanted to see if they'd recon my app for an unsecured card first, and I was told by two different reps they have no outlet for recons anymore. Not sure if they were pulling one over me or not. In fact, I worked for Discover Card for 10 years in the collections department and there were exeptions to everything -- always an avenue for our cardmembers to go further. Not so anymore I guess? On any hand, after being told this, I told the rep. I wanted to take advantage of the secured card offer, and he couldn't find it. Transferred me to new accounts and they were able to pull it up and they transferred me to a credit analyst (not sure why an analyst would need to finish opening a secured account) but nevertheless they did. After 12 months of good payment history, usage, clean reports, etc., I was told that I could get my $500 deposit back and my card would graduate. Would you consider a secured card as an alternative?

I was offered the secured but I didnt want it, I'll just wait until the end of the year.
Patience pays off with Discover... I was denied late 2013... and approved last week.
Only $1500 but I'm in the door which is all I wanted.
Oddly enough they included a denial letter with my approval letter and a "We couldn't approve you for the offer you applied for but we have another offer for you." I got the 0% for 6 months... apparently my 700 EQ FICO wasn't good enough for the 0% for 18 months deal... not that I care one way or another.
They listed Bankruptcy as a reason for my counteroffer.
They also listed "too many accounts with balances" which seems like yet another cookie cutter excuse considering I had 7 of 9 cards reporting a $0 balance.
Either way, I'm in.

Congrats on the approval, I'll just keep working on my pair of qs1's until next winter.
