Re: Discover

If you are not spending or using the card why do you need more limit on the card. Since it is a very old card the age of the card will help your credit report. Why close the card. I would say if possible put lot of charges in hopes of CLI. Or leave the card way it is and enjoy the age of the account on your report.

You need to put a lot of spend on their cards and pay it off before the statement cuts. I got 2 CLI's (500>1000>2000) after I significantly put more spend on the card. I've had the $500  CL for like 6 years before I got the first CLI this year.

I would try putting a couple hundred of spend on it, and try for a CLI a few days after your statement cuts. Discover is running 5% back on restaurants and PayPal ($1500/$75 cashback for the quarter) till next month which is awesome (Anytime you use PayPal as payment). Especially since since quite a few sites take PayPal as payment. I've been able to rack up a ton of spend buying stuff online for in store pickup for Home Depot, Best Buy, etc.

Discover is so over the place with who and how they give a cli, ones method doesnt necessarily  work for other. Paying off before a statement cuts doesnt equate to getting a cli, it just appears thats how it worked out for you. I think the only thing we may be certain of with Discover is using the card is a much more viable option than notSmiley Wink

I think it is implied with anything credit related that what works for one person might not work for another. Just like how you can have the "right" credit profile for a specific card and still get denied for different reasons. Credit card datapoints are a combination of what works for several people and identifying trends in it. For Discover CLI's what has worked for me is trend, just like how I haven't gotten a CLI every time a put extra spend on it, but I happened to get 2 of them when I did.

Re: Discover

I would not close it, but the low spend could be why you are having a hard time getting a CLI. I would consider a larger spend if you want a CLI.

Keep in mind, a lower limit will not hurt your credit as they do not look at your average limit. Also, if you want to maximize categories, you can use PayPal key to get 5% anytime PayPal is a category. If you don't have 5%, they can change your rewards easily without changing your opening date or anything else.

Re: Discover

@Sbrooks1 I spent some years with Discover not getting CLI. I started getting decent CLI this year by changing the following spending/payment patterns.

1. I use it as a daily transaction for doordash, renting movies, small e-commerce purchases etc. I put money through the card each month consistently.

2. I ALMOST pif. I leave a small balance on the card each month (under $100)

By doing this, I have gotten $3k in cli in the last 4 months.

YMMV of course

Is that a rhetorical question?

If you're serious, the only reason I ever request more credit is for score-boosting purposes, i.e., adding its new limit to my overall total credit, lowering my overall utilizaiton percentage and, if there's a balance on the card, lowering its utilization percentage. I'm sure others do it for similar reasons.

Re: Discover

I haven't received an increase. My discover history DP's:

opened secured card 4/2020. Within 4 months increased deposit to max $2500. Graduated 8th statement cut with a CLI of $200. It's been unsecured since December 2020. Requested CLI twice. Denied twice. Forget the reasoning. But the pull the discover scorecard TU score you see in the app. I had high utilization at one point and that was one reason for denial. My scorecard score is 699. Haven't tried since it updated August 7. Will wait until the next update In September. It's just one of those things.

and I confirm they used the scorecard TU score and date because both denial letters had the date and score provided in my app.

Re: Discover

Good morning, all!

So, I just the other day clicked on the "Credit Line Increase" button (so-to-speak) and finally found some love (I posted about this when it happened).  But, for everyone to see, here are some Data Points for my situation.

Below is a list of what I spent - and paid - during every Billing Cycle from the time my account was graduated from a secured card to an unsecured card (which was accompanied with a CLI from $500 to $1,500).  Please note that it was the August, 2020 Billing Cycle when this happened.

Discover Spending since Credit Line increase to $1,500
=======================================================

August 20 - September 19, 2020
Charges: $1,234.61
Payments: $1,203.36

September 20 - October 19, 2020
Charges: $375.00
Payments: $385.70

October 20 - November 19, 2020
Charges: $269.98
Payments: $409.36

November 20 - December 19, 2020
Charges: $458.85
Payments: $417.84

December 20, 2020 - January 19, 2021
Charges: $543.69
Payments: $545.70

January 20 - February 19, 2021
Charges: $508.24
Payments: $511.25

February 20 - March 19, 2021
Charges: $524.52
Payments: $527.51

March 20 - April 19, 2021
Charges: $687.77
Payments: $654.15

April 20 - May 19, 2021
Charges: $314.63
Payments: $381.25

May 20 - June 19, 2021
Charges: $ 730.71
Payments: $ 727.56

June 20 - July 19, 2021
Charges: $ 872.90
Payments: $ 831.05

July 20 - August 19, 2021
Charges: $ 406.41
Payments: $ 376.41

So, one year of the $1,500 Credit Limit with the above spend | pay.  I have pretty much been using AZEO with the Discover Card being the one card to report a balance.  And the reported balance is usually somewhere between $30 and $75.

Everyone has a different credit profile so - as mentioned already - who knows what triggers a denial (again, my denied CLIs were all due to 'insufficient time at current credit limit' - or whatever the actual verbiage is).

It does happen, though.

Just recently, I posted a thread asking for tips on how to get Discover to [finally] approve a CLI. I kid you not, but three days later I pushed the love button on Discover's site, and got a nice CLI! Maybe you'll have the same luck. Smiley Very Happy

If that method doesn't work out, I'd suggest making more use of your card. It looks like you're just barely using it, and they like to see considerable activity. Among the denial reasons I had along the way was one saying 'insufficient use of available credit' (or similar). In other words, I wasn't using what was already available to me, so why give me an increase?! I ramped up my spending for several months, but continued getting denied; I figured it was because I still kept my utilization rate too low. And then, out of the blue, I got approved. Smiley Surprised So I suggest having larger, more frequent transactions on your card, wait until the moon is full, stand on your head, make sure there's a 'd' in the day's name, and press the magic button! Smiley Happy

That is good insight. I was preapproved for discover on their prequal sight, but did not pull the trigger because apr was 22.99 percent. I want their card but waiting until they work down the interest rate. My question to you is what was your discover utilization when you hit the love button? What was your total utilization when you hit the love button at the time they gave you the CLI?

Don't carve these figures in stone, because I'm not 100% sure about them. But they should at least be ballpark. I think my Discover utilization was around 4% and my overall utilization around 9% when I finally got the CLI. Note that nothing substantial had changed since previous attempts--all of which were declined.

22.99%? Ouch!! That's really high. Mine is 12.99%. Maybe waiting until your scores improve a bit would help bring that down. And, of course, once you're in you can always request a reduced APR, once you're established with them as a good customer.
