NFCU vs MYFico Forum

NFCU is my main bank and I'm in the local branch at least once every week or so conducting business.

I have had the NFCU Rewards card for 3 years ($14.5K CL) and got the Flagship ($25K CL) at the end of December.   I mentioned to the branch manager that I was looking forward to applying in a few months for the NFCU Amex.  They asked me why was I waiting, and I told them that I was told (from the MyFICO forums) that it was 90 days and 3 statements from receiving your last card before you could apply for the next one.   They assured me this wasn't the case, that it was just a clean 30 days.

So, I got home, went on the website and applied.   And was denied.  I wasn't sure what the reason was since I'm a few months shy of 4 years from my BK7 DC, and I had opened up 2 new cards in the past 4 months.   So I waited.

And today I got the answer.   "Your recently approved Navy Federal Credit Card is too new".   Which is bad that I got denied, but also good, since it seems like I just need to wait another month and reapply.

However, it did prove that the MyFico forums are more knowledgable about NFCU practices/timelines than their own employees!

*On a side note, it would seem as if I didn't get a HP from the app.   My guess is that my DQ from timing purposes didn't require a HP on their part to check my credit.   So at least there's that.

Re: NFCU vs MYFico Forum

I am 3 plus years post bk7 also. I have followed the guidelines on NFCU cards on this forum and I received a cli every time I asked,  furthermore I have heeded other guidance regarding other lenders on various issues and have always been steered right.

Sometimes you need to read a lot of posts on an issue but once there is a consensus, in my case anyway, its been golden, ymmv

No, it wasn't.   I had another small CU in my BK7, credit cards, and my house.   I had been with NFCU about 20 years prior, but moved it to a bank.   It was very easy to get back with them after I filed.

What I find hilarious are the ones that think all the collected knowledge of the forums is wrong, so they call in "to verify" and the CSR blatently lies to them/doesn't really know/tells them what they want to hear then they come back here letting us know about how such and such rep told them we were all wrong.  Then the "BEWARE" post gets made a few days later...always makes me chuckle anyway. Sometimes people just have to learn the hard way.

Re: NFCU vs MYFico Forum

@Lou-natic where as I agree the forums are generally right they are general rules of thumb not exact rules.

Rules at banks are also rules right up until they  are not. I use my Alt Go as an example all the time I was about 7 accounts over USB's 1-2/12 card rule and was approved instantly I even had 2 new cards less than 60 days old. It never hurts to ask particularly for serial openers like me. With a decent score and income 1 more HP is not the end of the world I generally don't even get a point loss of them at this point.

See I don't get that lucky. I can follow every rule and still get rolled over on. This has been a thing my whole life and not just for credit. For some reason in my life if I don't dot every "i" and cross every "t" then for some reason I get shafted every time. I know people that say "you makle your own luck" and for the life of me I can't figure out how but I digress.

Like I said I don't disagree, however I do think a majority of these rules are more like guidelines than actual rules. Kinda like they are default answers they spit out when they don't like a profile but don't have a specific reason. Will use another example Comenity Bank told me no inquiries in 18 months was too many inquiries but m_smart with like 30 new accounts in 24 months was approved instantly for the same card. For the right profile, they don't care what the guidelines say.

I was 5 credit cards and an autoloan deep in the credit game by month 6 when the rule of thumb most people on here would say I should think about getting card 2 in the next 6 months.

The real trick is figuring out if the rules apply to you on that particular day. In any case you have an excellent credit score and more credit than 90+ percent of credit profiles I think are doing just fine.
