Took a chance and did the prequel for the Navy Federal Card. Showed that I was prequalified for several different cards. I went ahead and chose one and completed the application. Afterwards the website said that they were unable to approve me for a card. What a waste of a HP. I will be calling them to complain and ask them to remove the HP. It's a scam to prequalify someone with the same information they will use to complete the application. I went on over to USAA and was instantly approved for $15k. Guess I will be closing my accounts at Navy Federal.

NFCU prequal page is crap. Not all prequal pages are created equal. It is well documented throughout this forum on Navy's sketchy prequal page.
With that being said... I'd be interested in some DP on this one. I was a previous USAA customer, and after 15 years... I couldn't slam the door on them quick enough. NFCU has been nothing short of amazing in my short time there.
I just experienced the exact opposite of this. I joined navy in may/21 with a checking/savings with a small balance. every time i checked the prequal it offered the secured nrewards only. on xmas day 2021 i said what the heck after penfed gave me a PCR 7.5k sl and i apped for the navy cash rewards regardless of the prequal. approved for the cr 3700 sl.
From reading various posts i assumed USAA was harder to get than NAVY, head scratcher.

What was the reason listed in their denial ? Sorry that you weren't approved but there's no grounds for you to have the inquiry removed as you applied for the card.

It might be helpful for you to look around the page where the pre-qual is at. The pre-qual page for me told me to login and I found what the print said in bold.
Plus it is helpful to look around on other sites to determine if the pre-qual is legit or not.
Also what card was it for @robleewent?
It seems that the Flagship card is harder to obtain than the others.
I think you're overreacting a bit because of the denial, IMO. No prequalification with any lender anywhere is 100%. I personally wouldn't shut down all my Navy accounts just because of a CC app denial. Also, you have no grounds for HP removal because you were seeking credit and consented to the pull when you applied. Also see disclaimer in image above. It's not a scam.
Sorry for the denial, but it's actually pretty well known around here that Navy's prequal is unreliable.
I applied for the Platinum with $0 annual fee. I have other cards for travel perks so didn't really need the Flagship.

No scam, one just has to understand that prequals do not mean one is approved but one meets the requirements they are looking for in applicants. From there it will be determined if they want to extend you credit.
Closing your accounts after a denial is ones prerogative but I would caution not to do so. Navy is well known to help many of their members more so than other institutions and even damaged profiles will see some positive help. Ime , sometimes closing in haste has future consequences in that when you decide you want an in, they won't be there for you in the moment. Build your history so one day, even if not today, it pays off.
