New to Amex Cards

First time poster, usually I find the answer to my question without having to actually ask it, so thank you all for that.

I was just approved for a Delta Platinum card and am now looking to accept a prequalified offer for either one of the charge cards or the BCE.

Would it make sense to get a charge card as well to go with the Delta card? Or should i go for the BCE?

Thank you.

If you think you can make good use of both of the SUB that are offered, then go for it.  As for which to go for, that would be what you're looking to get in return of credit cards.  Some like the cash back, others are hoarding points for when travel gets back to normal.  All your other cards are cashback cards, does the BCE fit your profile better than one of the charge cards?

@Anonymous do you want to focus on earning points or cash back?  What are your highest spending categories?

Re: New to Amex Cards

MR points can be transferred to Skymiles or hotel rewards. The real question is does it make sense to get a MR earning card based on your spend. If you can't maximize on the bonus categories, it's hard to justify a charge card and its AF.

Re: New to Amex Cards

Hello. If one of their charge cards would fit your lifestyle, earn you a lot of Membership Rewards points, and you like the discipline of paying in full each month, they go for it. Good luck!

Re: New to Amex Cards

Lets take a stab at the math, and not AMEX math i.e. assume a MR can be cashed out at 1 cent per point.

AMEX MR can be converted to Delta miles at a 1:1 ratio.

The Gold card earns 4x MR per dollar spend, with a $250 AF.  The BCE earns 3% cashback on up to $6K spend per year - maxinum $180 cashback.      To get value from the Gold card you would need to earn 43,000 points in a year so the breakeven point would be if you averaged $207/week in groceries on the Gold card.

That can get skewed by the 4x MR on dining and how well one can leverage the monthly Uber and specialized dining credits on the Gold card, so you need to take into consideration how well you would be able to leverage the Gold card and how you personally would value the MR.

Re: New to Amex Cards

Thanks everyone!

The math helped a lot. I applied for the Gold card and got a pending message, however I think it's due to the fact that I did two apps in one day.

Fingers crossed, will update with the result.
