. However, I have a big UTI problem which I'm trying very hard to address. Need suggestions.
NFCU is an awesome credit union.
If you're looking for a great CU with great rates that doesn't HP to join, here are a couple of add'l options:
Air Force FCU offers rewards checking - SP on EQ
Alliant Credit Union - SP on EQ
Evansville Teachers CU - SP on TU (has rewards checking)
Unify FCU - SP on EX
Re/ spinetech - Alliant will be concerned about the "big utilization problem" you mention, and other credit unions/ banks may as well.
Please be aware that the success rate for getting new cards when you apply with very high utilization is not very good. How high of a utilization problem is this?

Here's the page to the download link to donate $20 to Longhorn Foundation for those interested. Especially Irish who is an undercover Longhorns fan! 😆

SP to join?
Ok I just got off phone with rep from UFCU and she said EX sp for membership and EX hp for credit products. Hp is good for 60 days.
I will be sending off my $20 to the Longhorn Foundation this week. 😉 Thanks humu for the new find!
Baller4Life,
On the main page, you have UFCU listed as an EQ HP. Is it an EX SP or EQ?
9)University Federal CU - EQ sp for membership. Open membership with $20 donation to the Longhorn Foundation
Thanks!

Make sure you live in Texas....many people have stated that they were unable to completely join this CU; they were all told to come to a branch to finish joining the CU.
Only in limited areas of Texas will you be able to walk into a UFCU branch. They are mostly in the Austin area, with a branch in Galveston, I believe.
I've been through a couple of the CU threads, but haven't seen this annotated. I was looking for a couple of CUs I could join soon and app for CCs when I come out of the garden in January. (My thought was it might look better if I was sending a little cash their way before I come calling for a card.)
I know CS/reps can be sketchy, but I had this conversation with a Unify FCU rep this morning:
I asked because I couldn't see a way to open just a savings account with them online, which they confirmed, but there aren't any branches local to me
I think all CUs require that you open a savings account to qualify for membership.
Not sure about the checking account requirement if you apply on line, since I have only joined CUs by visiting a branch.
Quick questions because I've read so much my head is spinning.
1. Are you basically paying for a savings account with these? NFCU turns into a yearly fee of $25..etc.
2. I take it Alliant is the easiest and cheapest with it's $10 donation? Also a savings? And if I have it right, I will still receive some advantage with a $500 secured loan even if I do it in the shortest term possible than what they're doing in the Alliant thread but not as much.. Do I have that part right?
Thanks.

Always go with the longest term SSL. Once the loan is paid it doesn't benefit your scores as much. Alliant is one of many that you can join that do SSLs. There are some that are easier to join IME.
Did you find Alliant difficult to join? They were pretty painless for me - I had to upload a utility bill and copy of DL, but that seems pretty common. They've been the most consistently painless CU to deal with out of the ones I belong to as well.
