QuickSilver CLI DENIED - Too Little Use

I have not seen a CLI from cap one in a while (couple of years at least). I used to use this card as my only credit card until I got in with NFCU. A year ago I tried for a CLI and they denied because I was only paying the minimum, had too high utilization, and had a bounced payment (weird situation). Fast forward to current times and my denial said I use the card too little given the limit I have ($4k) and there were no other denial factors. I'm pretty annoyed at this because I never stopped using the card, I just stopped running up the balance.

Does anyone know how much you need to use a cap one card so that they don't say you use it too little. If I use this as my primary for the next 3 months think that will get me a CLI?

I had to cycle both of mine 3x a month for 3 months before they gave me a significant increase

Re: QuickSilver CLI DENIED - Too Little Use

This is the sort of post that has always had me shaking my head as a member of this forum.

You have a Cap 1 card. They are notoriously stingy with CLs. They are likewise very partial to heavy usage and payoff.

Your limit is $4,000, but you never use anywhere near that amount. In fact, unless I misread your post, you really don't use it significantly.

So, I guess what I'm wondering is this: Why would a CCC like Cap 1 bump up the limit of such a card? Am I missing something?

In my wallet: Local Credit Union $25,000, Northwest Bank VISA $25,000, AMEX BCP $15,000

When you say you never stopped using the card, what does that mean?  How much spend a month, on average, do you put on this card?

Re: QuickSilver CLI DENIED - Too Little Use

I got a $9k CLI on a $3.5k QS once from using it religiously.

Cap One demands usage.

Think like a bank...No reason to give you CLI if you are not using more than half of your limit each month.

Rebuild started in 2014  -  $100k unsecured credit in 2017  -  $500k unsecured credit in 2024.

That is most of your problem IMO if that missed payment was on a Cap1 product

Sorry for your denial

Re: QuickSilver CLI DENIED - Too Little Use

ALL Cap 1 cards like lots of spend on it before giving you a CLI.  And when I say alot of spend not buying a pack of gum once a week.  They like heavy spend on it.   If you have a $1000 CL they want to see you using most of that  or over half monthly for like 6 months before they will give you anything.   They are well known for this

Re: QuickSilver CLI DENIED - Too Little Use

I've been putting $500-$700 on my Ven1 the last few months ($5k limit) and was just denied a CLI. I expected the denial because I was not using much over 10% of my current limit and I know that's how Cap1 operates. I still love them and the way they've treated me when I needed them over the years, so there are no hard feelings, that is just how you have to expect them to do business. I've diverted about $2k/month spend toward my new Savor card ($15k limit) to try for a CLI at the 91 day mark. I also do not expect a CLI on that one either because I am just not using a large portion of the limit. The last CLI I received from them I was consistently utilizing about 50-60% of my CL for about 6 months.

Its not you. Cap1 is being very conservative these days. Try them another 6 months, hopefully things go back to some normality!

Re: QuickSilver CLI DENIED - Too Little Use

Thanks for all the replies. To answer a few questions:

1) In regards to my usage when I received my increases (years ago) I was using close to 100% of the limit. I was able to get this card up from a few hundred dollars to $4k. I currently can easily run up a few thousand (of normal expenses) but simply have shifted my spend to NFCU because I like them more.

2) Regarding the bounced payment they did tell me to wait in the denial letter from a year ago. This bounced payment didn't result in a late. I was simply forced to resubmit payment 2 days later. According to the denial letter this had no affect on my CLI rejection this time around. The only reason stated was too little usage.

3) I do not personally believe someone needs to spend 100% of their limit in order to be worthy of a higher limit but cap one might.... I currently run through about $800 a month for the last 6 months now that it isn't my daily driver. Asking for a CLI when you only use half a limit or even 25% of a limit shouldn't be frowned upon because it all has to do with overall utilization. Many of us zero out each month but that isn't always possible. In those situations where you need to carry a balance the higher your credit limit the better off you will be.

Based on some of your replies I'm thinking i'll need to turn this into my daily driver for a few months and try again towards end of summer.
