I know you have to have an account atleast 6 months old and 6 months since the last CLI. Should I pay off the balance to $0 before I ask?
with Sync you can literally ask for a CLI every day
you definitely don't need to pay it down to zero - though you may get a larger CLI if you do
every 6 months plus 1 day may also realize a larger CLI
but there isn't much math to Sync - they give out large CLIs regularly - then sometimes decide the CL is too large...
I ask every 4 months, but lately I have gotten a maximum limit message. I heard you need to go over the next credit score tier/bracket?

No, it has nothing to do with moving into the next credit score tier or bracket @arifjk. It's profile-specific. Some of the factors that can influence such a decision would be: time since the last CLI was approved, current SYNCB exposure relative to income, how often your account is used, internal behavioral score, etc.
Literally just asked for one, they immediately gave me 1K increase. My opening line was $500, after 6 months (December 2021) I asked for an increase and they bumped me up to $1000, and today I asked again and they granted me 1K. I was going to wait 6 months til I saw your post, thank you.
Yesterday I paid balance down to $0. Today I asked for a CLI on my Paypal card since I know I'll be using it much more with the new 3% category and wanted some utilization padding. They doubled my credit limit. I asked for $20k but they only gave me $14K. $14K is exactly twice the previous limit that I had.
I wonder if they'll close my card because of the CLI
It's my only card with them.
