No credit card required
Browse credit cards from a variety of issuers to see if there's a better card for you.
now that im slowly establishing credit , i was hoping to try my luck for a retail cc. but im looking for one that has a soft pull so it wont affect my score too much. any suggestions. not lookin for anything in particular just something that would work with a 580 across the board and allows me to start opening up more cc's to continue my growth with my score.
I'd be interested to know, too. My understanding is that, to open a new account, soft pulls are used for pre-qualifications and hard pulls for making a lending decision for either store card or bank card.
Search the forum for "Shopping Cart Trick" or "SCT." You should yield some info regarding Comenity-backed retail cards (like overstock.com, Victoria's Secret, etc.) Essentially, you throw a couple of items in the virtual cart, begin the checkout process, and you may see a pop up advising you are approved/eligible for an account. It will yield only a SP on your report if you are extended an offer through one of these pop-ups. Note that Comenity-backed Visa cards (Sportsman's Guide, Total Rewards) will still require an HP. The SP's are for retail cards only.
As with any credit decision, be smart. It's recommended that you don't go crazy using the SCT at 10 -15 merchants, since although you will not be gtting HP's, you will tank your AAoA. The generally accepted advice is to get it for merchants that you will actually use it at - many start with toy limits, and if you get a bunch of toy limits on cards you'll never use, then they won't grow and the idea of taking a hit on your AAoA fr the benefit of higher limits down the line is kind of shot.
Overstock.com tends to be one of the more popular ones, if you can get it to work. They tend to be generous with starting limits (mine started at $750) and will often let you request a CLI immediately if you register online. Also, many report that you can successfully request CLIs monthly with ongoing, responsible use. This is in addition to having access to a wide variety of merchandise (as opposed to most of the retail cards, which tend to be for very specialized stores,) good prices, and special financing terms.
Good luck!
Thank you for the thorough answer, GT20!
I followed GT20 guide for SP SCT trick here, gave me $2500 SL.. was denied by banks lately too many HPs i guess
NASA is probably the best but you need to get your score up before you app .
NASA is NOT a soft pull -- I read that online here and tried the app and boom -- my FICO alert lit up like a Christmas tree with a hard pull.
