Recently applied for a CLI on my Amex ED (1 year old). Never got the 3x CLI so I figured I'd try again after trying 6 months ago for the first time and getting denied based on debt to income ratio. My income is low because I am a full-time college student but I've managed to pay a lot more down on my auto loan (I'm a year ahead). I applied for 10k with a SL of 5k and was instantly approved. I kind of feel like I played it too safe because of my previous denial...

Grats! You did well on over coming your previous turn down! Sure have broken into the credit world!

But you should always ask for 3x your current SL. If all they wanted to give was $5k, they would have countered and still given you the $5k even with you asking for $15k. But you could have possibly gotten more than you did, had you asked for the full 3x.
CONGRATS on your 2X AmEx ED CLI, your income may be low but you have a Very Nice assortment of key lenders and CLs in your signature!!!
