Just wanted to share a data point for anyone who’s been through Chapter 7 and is wondering when (or if) American Express will ever let them back in. My Chapter 7 bankruptcy was discharged on April 11, 2019. I had four Amex cards included in the bankruptcy, totaling about $8,600, which I did not pay back.
Over the years, I’ve tried Amex’s prequalification tool several times with no luck; most recently earlier this year, still nothing. But a few weeks ago, I noticed that on my Credit Karma account, Amex cards started showing up in my pre-approvals and “recommended cards” section. Curious, I went directly to Amex’s prequalification tool, and to my surprise, I was prequalified for multiple cards. I decided to try my luck and applied...and was approved for both the Blue Cash Preferred ($6,000 SL) and the Amex Platinum, both on 10/23/2025, about 6 years and 6 months post bankruptcy discharge.
I know Amex is known for having a long memory and for being tough to get back in with if you burned them in bankruptcy, especially without repayment. So I’m thrilled (and shocked) that they let me back in!

Congrats! This gives me a lot of hope. I burned Amex for about $15k in my own Chapter 7 back in 2021 and have been wondering if I’d ever have a shot at getting back in. Hearing your timeline and approval definitely makes me feel more optimistic. Huge congrats again on getting both cards!
Congrats on the approvals!
Congrats!
I was discharged 2/2019 and burned them with BCP and Delta and they don't even begin to entertain me. LOL!!!
How much do you burned them for?
OP said $8600.
I burned them on two cards for $7,600.
Today, I did the prequal and I was actually APPROVED  Caveat, I only received preapproval for cards with an annual fee -- Platinum ($895 af), Gold ($325 af), and Delta Skymiles Platinum ($350 AF).
So, I didn't bite. For now. Lol!
Congratulations on your approvals I'm sure as you've seen there are a lot of us that still haven't been welcomed back in. I myself it's been since 2008 since I was blacklisted and for a sum a little smaller then yours. And to this day I've been blacklisted still. No soup for me now I must move on Danielson. Enjoy being let back in and have a great weekend.
Congrats!
WOOHOO!! Congratulations on your Approval!!👏🏼🍾🥂
