So excited, I've worked hard to get my scores up and decided to come out of the garden. I went slightly overboard, BUT I've now got all my goal cards except one... the elusive Venture Rewards card. Cap1 doesn't give me CLIs on my current QS and charges me $5 per month membership fee. The problem is I've had the card since I was 18, so can't close it down now. For reference below is what I came out with:
Costco Citi - $11k
Citi DC - $9.7k (Taking advantage of the BT promo in a month or so)
PenFed VS - $10k (Wanted to build a relationship there for down the road)
Alliant VS - $15k
Green Card (wanted the extra MR SUB for travel this year)
Util: 19%
Inquiries: 5 from the spree, 1 from Schwab due to fall off in Apr
Two questions... On any card, should I wait the full 1 year before any CLIs? (Gut is telling me yes) Second question, I have sub-par cards and a Discover Secured (old charge off has me stuck from conversion). How many cards can I cancel that are old and high limits at a time during the next year? I've closed two already and there's a card I'm an AU on that I don't want reporting as I can't control the util on it.
Thanks for the advice and yay for gardening!
Congrats, DC should be SP .. Try in about 6 Months. others are probably HP's (Not sure on Alliant?)
Thanks for the advice @M_Smart007. I'm not sure either, I'll go lurking through some Alliant posts.
Congrats on the approvals!
Congrats Just be careful with what you remove so you don't kill your Age but again Congrats on the Haul!
I'll give you a very simple answer with which many would disagree. Close any card you don't want or use, especially if it's costing you money. I didn't hesitate to close even my oldest card. Good accounts will stay on your report for many years, and by the time they fall off, the loss probably won't matter.
For me, it's about simplicity and peace of mind. (I'm a control freak.) I don't care enough about the number/score to hang onto something worthless. But if you can't bear shutting down an older card, then do what works for you.
As for CLIs, the longer you wait, the better. But there are plenty of cards which will offer generous increases after six months. It will just depend on the lender and how you use the card.
Congrats on your big successes and good luck!!!
Congrats !
congrats on your new cards! those are some good sl!
you said that you have all, but 1, of your goal cards. so, i would still close the cap1qs that's costing you $60 a year. at the very least, ask if they can offer a product change or remove the fee. i have the qs and there's no fee. i think that you have the grandfathered card? if so, i think that it's silly that they're making you pay the fee while not charging newer customers.
