If I were to venture a guess, your CLI was most likely triggered by the spend those two months.  Do you pay the statement balance only or do you pay to zero?  I wonder what the highest actual balance on the card was during those two months.

Yes, I think you're right!

Typically I try to pay to zero. I prefer not to carry a balance because this is my highest APR card but sometimes I let my statement cut with small balances. (Sept - $143, Oct - $11, Nov - $0, Dec- $60 ).  I usually make several payments throughout the month, especially in those Paypal/Amazon months!

I don't know if it matters but I also have checking account, savings and and car loan with Chase.

Cap One QS (5/2008) $7k | Nordstrom VS (7/2017) $15k | Amex BCP (9/2018) $9.8k | Chase Freedom Flex (12/2018) $8.7k | NFCU Amex (9/2019) $31k | NFCU Flagship (12/2019) $15.2k | Discover it (10/20) $7k | Chase Sapphire Preferred (7/2021) $8k |

So you pay to zero or a small balance before statement cut then, and your actual max balance doesn't get that high.  They must use total spend as a metric for CLIs as opposed to (or in addition to) max balances.

Of course you won't pay interest if you pay the statement balance before the due date, whether you let it report or not.
