I had tried several times to get an unsecured Discover card without success as I wanted one CC from all four networks. I wanted to get in with Discover so I applied and received the secured card. Looks like my strategy has paid off.

Are auto increases from Discover rare? I was under the impression that they were typical of Discover for good credit management.

They are if the card gets seldom use. If you use the card as your go-to, Discover will be inclined to honor CLI requests. YMMV.
