Discover Odd Auto CLI

I haven't used my card since June of 2018 and Discover emailed me on Saturday that they would be closing my card if I didn't show some activity by this June.  They also mentioned that maybe I wasn't using the card because of my credit limit.  They increased it from $3,000 to $9,000.  Over the past year I've had great success on getting better cards and SL, so I just SDed Discover.  They were also my lowest CL.

I've had the card 8 years and only have had two CLIs that I intiated and they both were pretty small increases.  I'm not sure if anyone else has received a similar letter about inactivity and CLIs.  At the time I received the email, my FICO scores were between 725-739.  I attempted a CLI back in November, and was declined due to not establishing usage of the current credit line allocated.

Just wanted to add a little more to the mystery that is Discover CLIs.

Hey, AJC, have you tried this method? The old SUIATTYL method. “Stop using it and they triple your limit.”

So was all of this information contained in the same letter... a "warning" of potential account closure approaching in the next few months, but also an auto-CLI in the same communication?  That does seem very odd to me and I must say it's the first time I've heard of this.

Also you mentioned a CLI denial previously.  Could you give the exact wording of the denial reason provided on the letter you received?  95% of the time with Discover it's "insufficient experience with current credit limit" which actually pertains to the element of time, not spend if that's the reason you got.  If you did in fact get a denial reason based on not spending enough, I'm just curious exactly how it was worded.  Thanks!

Re: Discover Odd Auto CLI

I don't want to screenshot the entire message as I'm on my phone and can't blank out personal information, but the email reads:

Subject: Important Information About Your Account

"Our latest review of your account shows that it is not currently active. If your account remains inactive through June 6, 2019 we will need to close your account ending in XXXX.

But we don't want to see you go!

Perhaps your credit line is the reason you have not used your card. If so, we hope you are pleased to hear that we have increased your credit line."

You are also correct about that CLI increase in November. Insufficient experience with current credit line. The last CLI was in August. So that may be why it was denied.

Re: Discover Odd Auto CLI

I did find another thread of a user getting a CLI after a long period of inactivity. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post MyFICO forum links, but I found it through search. I searched "Discover account inactivity CLI".
