Re: Discover cat & mouse game ends w/$5000 CLI

Some of you may have seen the thread I started about a month ago regarding the cat and mouse game I've been playing with a [$500] Discover CLI.  For those that haven't, you can read about it here:

https://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit-Card-Applications/Discover-CLI-on-table-for-2-months-removed/td-p/5646251

To summarize, back in April or so (3 months after my last Discover CLI in January) when requesting a Discover CLI online, I was offered $500.  Having always accepted whatever was offered prior, this time I declined it.  After declining it, many times (basically weekly) over the course of the next 2 months I continued to request a CLI, always seeing that $500 offer on the table and always declining it.  From what I've read on the forum, some people saw their offer "on the table" grow larger if they left it alone rather than accepting it.

After 2 months or so, the $500 offer was taken off the table, which prompted me starting the thread linked above.  Over the course of the next month, the $500 offer taken off the table was put back on, which I again declined... then last week was again taken off the table.  My statement cut a couple of days ago, so I did another request tonight and this time saw a $5000 offer, which I accepted.  So, interesting stuff, as the CLI offered over the course of 1 month went like this:

$500 (declined) --> $0 --> $500 (declined) --> $0 --> $5000 (accepted)

Of course there's no way to know if I had originally accepted the $500 CLI offered to me whether or not today the $5000 CLI would have been available, but ultimately it seems the decision to sit on my hands and wait it out may have been beneficial in terms of achieving a larger CLI.

I also do believe that after your statement cuts your account is evaluated differently... so if someone gets one answer/decision before their statement cuts, it's very possible to get a completely different answer after it.  I've sort of seen this throughout my 3 year account history, but this most recent data point sort of reaffirms that for me.

That is amazing. Thanks for sharing that, and I'm glad it worked out that way, instead of with them lowering your CLI offer to the "SJ Special" ($300).

OK I'm going to play "hard to get" now, and try your strategy Smiley Happy

That’s awesome! Congrats! I guess you’ll have to deal with that uneven limit a while longer lol #forscience

Tell me about it... I've been dealing with it since my first ever CLI of $3800 that took my $xx,500 limit to $xx,300 and with this 10th CLI that I just received I still have that darn "300" at the end.  I keep telling myself that if I get a small CLI offer that would allow me to round it off to the nearest thousand that I'd do it, although my small offers are always $500 and that would just bring me to an $xx,800 limit.  One day once I hit my ceiling with Discover I'll probably just call them up and have them round it down.

Recently I got an "SJ Special" of $300 which would have taken me to 10,100.... lowered it to $200... and rounded my CL to a clean 10k Smiley Happy

I also allowed a balance to report on my Discover card this cycle, where it had been probably 3 cycles or so of $0 balances reported (but still spend being made) prior.  I don't think that matters at all, at least it hasn't in the past for me, but I figured I'd throw that out there.

Re: Discover cat & mouse game ends w/$5000 CLI

Huge congrats BBS on this strategy paying dividends for you!

I think the next intresting thread to start would be about this Disco cli behavior pattern is the individuals with $40K plus credit lines that continue to see “huge” growth respective to the amount of actual accounts they have. I am welcome to be corrected if I am wrong but, most of these huge disco credit lines where handed out to one’s with very nice SL out of the gate. And also ones who didn’t nor have gained many tradelines after the actual disco approvals.  I though I saw one individual with an $80K CL?

I mention this because, at least in my case once I started to acquire multiple credit card accounts and credit seeking from other lenders most if not all my credit line increases completely dried up! 😒

I am sure a few others could chime in on this as well. All I recieve now is between $300-500 cli’s. Of course with minimum spend but that doesn’t seem to matter especially in your case.

Starting FICO08 Scores 2016 All in the mid 500’s

+1 this is mainly true from what i have seen as well.. Not much credit to start get bigger CL's and on larger CLI wagon and are bucketed better than people with alot of credit to start out, etc.  This has been discussed before and I fully believe this to be true as well.  Anyways we can just take from other threads and draw our own conclusions from that.   Realtive to my income vs. others that have alot high discover limits, my 15k limit is still laughable compared to say BofA at 61.5k and some of my other big cards

Anyways congrats on your CLI and as another stated you should of taken slider down to round the number down for OCD reasons, but obviously you want to see how far you can push discover w/regards to CL's and that is fine as well.  We all have different things we find interesting on this forums.  For example you don't want new accounts persay and keep the 850's where I want to see how many new lenders I can get, etc.. We all have different reasons for our madness.

Well, that's not so bad; you're bouncing around between the @AverageJoesCredit Special ($500) and the @SouthJamaica Special ($300)

Yes they entrusted me with only $1k a little more than 4 years ago, and since then they begrudgingly trust me with another $300 from time to time... but no more Smiley Happy
