So I applied for discover it last week, got instant approval, generous limit, and was expecting my card to arrive this week. I checked the status on discovers website and the approval message was updated to "were sorry we're unable to approve you for a discover card, you will get a letter explaining why..." Has this happened to anyone here ? Is discover known for approving credit cards and then denying applications?
I believe we have seen this before, and despite what the website said, the card still showed up and was usable. I attempted to search for the thread, but couldn't find it.
I did find this older thread, which is very similar to what you experienced, but I think it could go either way.
Thanks guys. I looked over those threads. I guess it can go either way, really. I called them just now, and as soon as I put in my last 4, the automated system immedately said "We see that you have a card that needs to be activated.." hmmm. I did not dare to speak with a CSR and hung up. Checked application status again and "Unfortunately, we are unable to approve your application at this time. In 7-10 days you'll get a letter from us explaining why." ... I guess it's just a waiting game now. I'll see if it shows up in my mailbox and update here. Thanks! Figners crossed!
Happened to me 2 weeks ago. I called immediately and they confirmed approval and told me my SL. Card arrived about 1 week later. Seems to be a system glitch.
Wow thank you, ttulaw! Your response gave me some hope!
I'm debating whether I should call discover and speak with the account manager regarding my application, however I do not have stellar credit and I don't want them to cancel out the application if this indeed is a mistake on their end. Arrghh!

I wouldn't rock the boat. Manual reviews can bring up a whole mess of things that the computer algorithm overlooked. I would wait it out.
Ah too late. I just couldn't wait! I just got off the phone with a CSR (account manager?) who was super nice and told me the card was sent out on the 22nd, she didn't mention anything about my application being denied!! I guess I'll wait for it in the mail and see if there are any surprises when it comes to activation! I really hope it's just a glitch! Thanks for all your help guys, this is a great community! I will update once I receive the card and (hopefully) activate it! \o/
