I applied for the free version. We aren't ready to travel big time yet. Kids are still very young. Later this year we'll do two-player mode and my wife will get the free version. Then we'll both upgrade to the ascend next year

Congrats! It's a really great card family to be in! Great plan set out for you. When you do start to maximize it for travel, be sure to check Hilton's site for deals that can add multipliers to the points you accrue. It really can help you add up a nice little pile of points in a short time.

Oh they'll get value from both AmEx and Hilton all right. If they time their upgrades right, they'll likely collect four SUBs simply by choosing to start with the NF version. Not a bad bit of business.
