Been helping my SO with credit.  While I already have a relationship and cards with Penfed, he did not.  We received a preapproval mailer for the Gold Card and though the rate wasn't the best...it was a foot in the door for him.  After the CC application, he opened checking and savings.  Through the CC application process, they stated he at least needed a savings account with $5 so they opened one automatically and we funded it and the checking afterwards from his new Chase FU.   As a result, he's now part of the $100,000 TCL club!
