Rejected for Discover CLI... Approved for new 10K limit

Hi... After a few years of credit issues, I’m finally back on track with a low utilization, a number of charge offs paid and I’m getting cards again.

My scores are in the 670-685 range, but with near 0% utilization. I have these cards
Chase Freedom - 5K
Discover More - 5.3K
J Crew - 1.1K
Slate - $700
I’ve added three brand new cards this year
AMEX Delta Gold - 1K
Amex Hilton - 1K
Amex Plat - NPSL

As you can see, Amex is giving me small limits (I charged off an Amex card previously, but paid it back in full). I look forward to gardening these and getting CLIs.

I requested CLIs on my Chase and Discover cards and was rejected. These cards I kept current all the way through my financial troubles a few years ago.

I noticed I was preapproved for a Discover It with Cashback Match, so I applied. I was approved with a new 10K limit.

A few questions

1) Why did Discover deny my CLI but give me a big new credit line?
2) What other banks are somewhat generous with new accounts but stringent with CLIs? Could I apply for new Citi or BofA cards now?

Welcome Discover is a weird beast at best of times. Why many of us decide to try our hand at a second card , seems it can breathe some fresh air into our profiles. 10k is a great limit by the way.

Citi can be stringent in cli , sl and cards if you have lots of recent inqs. Boa can be generous with cli if your profile and income support it. They also like you to have assets with them for what th asts worth.

Discover makes no sense as AJC eluded to.. They rather give you a new card then increase an old card.. They tend to "bucket" people and have been more generous recently in initial SL then they use to be, etc..  Grats on a nice approvals for the scores you have as that is a very very generous limit
