AMEX App Plan It, want to Pay It: Updated with Plan It experience

DGF is going to start using her SPG card more, but wants to treat it like a debit card. This means using the app to Pay It on charges as they post.

The problem is that charges over $100 seem to only have the option of Plan It, not Pay It.

Is it possible to use the AMEX app to Pay It when the charge is over $100?

just go to make a payment and pay it off whenever you want to,  you can make a payment a day if you would like to,  a CC company really is not going to care how little or how often you pay them as long as they are getting paid

Re: AMEX App Plan It, want to Pay It

Agreed, but that is through the website. The mobile app is easier / more accessible and it would be nice to have the ability to pay larger charges immediately.

Sounds like a suggestion you need to make to Amex.

Re: AMEX App Plan It, want to Pay It

Maybe the app UI is different for different cards or for CC vs. charge cards but when I log in the "Make Payment" button is very prominent under the balance. Is that not the case for the SPG? Granted, both of the cards listed on my account are CCs.

Re: AMEX App Plan It, want to Pay It: Updated with Plan It experience

Switching to the Plan It side of the house, I now have run two Plan It's on two separate cards.

My SPG card is set up with a fixed $319 per month autopayment. On the September 24 statement, I tagged a large Plan It amount, among other charges that are not Plan It, and that Plan It amount is paying over three months. My fixed $319 autopay does not change, so I had to calculate what the remainder is to get to the Adjusted Balance, and pay up to the Adjusted Balance amount. Those have both cleared now, and the "Adjusted Balance" on line shows zero. Statement cuts in a day or two. The Total Balance includes the remainder of the Plan It plus a few more charges after the last statement.

My Hilton card is set up with "Pay Statement Balance" autopay. On the statement cut October 20, I decided a large charge I wanted to put on Plan It. So I went back to the phone app, and selected Plan It for that charge. The phone app then went through steps to authorize / approve the Plan It, and proposed changing my autopayment to be "Adjusted Balance". I approved that change, so now AMEX is set up to autopay the "Adjusted Balance" and I don't have to may an additional payment. The Plan It amount will be segregated into a different section of my statement totals, but since the October statement already cut I won't see the two sections until the November statement.

And with both cards, I can continue to charge / pay without worrying about losing the grace period on new charges.

I think once people get used to this feature, it could become quite popular. As I've noted on another thread, in a way it removes the need for another "Balance Transfer" card if one is financing short term items.

The ability to pay the card balance, yes that is available.

The Plan It vs Pay It reference is to individual charges, as they are listed in the phone app. There, you have either a non-filled Pay It button, or a filled in Plan It button. Each works slightly differently, and each is different functionality than the general "Make Payment" button. I suppose the "Make Payment" button could be used for the large amount intended to be paid now, but then that charge isn't tagged as paid out of the listing. It's a subtle difference in visuals Smiley Happy
