I do like the QS for cash back without a foreign transaction fee.  Dunno offhand of another offering with that combination (but please enlighten me).

Hope to be able to qualify for one when my EX score improves and my recent INQs fade (added 4 CCs in December).

Plenty of cards.

1) Penfed Cash Rewards

2) USAA Limitless (or any USAA cash card)

3) Navy Federal Cash Rewards

4) Paypal Cash Rewards

... And plenty of others.

You left out the rewards the cards offer. The Venture card is very similar to the Arrival Plus and right now offers 50,000 points, which is 10K points better than the Arrival Plus. After the minimum spend, the Venture card returns $560, which isn't too bad. As others have noted, Capital One is also a good entry-level card and option for people trying to rebuild their credit. But you are right Cap One is not in the same league as Amex or Chase. I've never had a Citi card but it seems to me that Citi doesn't offer anything exciting right now.

Not to hijack the thread, but the Citi Simplicity has a 21-month zero percent interest, no late fee, no penalty rate, etc. Best card to carry a BT, I think.

Right. Citi has some solid offerings.

The ThankYou Premier and Prestige are pretty good cards. Double Cash (even with FTF's) is pretty good because it gives 2% back with a 0% for 18 months balance transfer offer, and then you have the Simplicity, like you've said.

Re: Again, why do people care about Capital One?

I will never forget what Capital One did for me after my Ch. 13 discharge. They trusted me with a $30k limit. Who does that mere months after a bk discharge? Because of this, I now have plenty of prime cards and high limits. Also, another byproduct of them accepting me is my 15 year, 2.875 refinance on my house. Thank you, Capital One, for trusting me. I will never forget what you have done for me and my family.

Venture card = Stinks. $95 annual fee to get limited 2% cash back with no special travel benefits.

Venture One = Stinks, same as above except no AF and limited 1.25% back.

Quicksviler = Stinks, only 1.5% cash back when there's plenty that give 2% or more back.

Quicksilver One = Stinks, $39 annual fee and 24.99% APR, only 1.5% cash back.

Journey = Stinks, 1-1.25% back isn't good compared to other student cards.

Business cards = Stink, they reflect similar issues to the consumer credit cards.

Capital One seems to be increasing their AF's and heightening their underwriting criteria, while keeping their medicore rewards systems in place. I'm not really sure what people see in C.O? Surely Chase, AMEX, Citi, and others are much, much better lenders. And then of course you have the world famous "triple pull" when lenders like AMEX either soft pull for new apps (existing members) or pull just one report.

Not everyone is going to be a "fan" of every product, which btw thanks for leaving PenFed ;-)  Interestingly enough, it always appears as though you have a gripe or are annoyed about everything ;-)  Lighten up, if a card, ,product, bank/CU, policies, design, or any other annoying factor is not suitable for your lifestyle, then part ways.   There's plenty of opportunity in just about every product if used wisely and these forums are not the end all and be all when it comes to the masses of consumers that every lender caters to.  Simply a small piece of the pie.

@Anonymous being said, Capital One has been great to me and my needs ever since they absorbed Signet Bank.  Over the years (including my two single $50K approvals from a couple years ago) where I was able to combine into one single card @ $133K.  Low APR, no issues redeeming rewards, no CLD.  Granted, I'm an outlier in the grand scheme of things for a high income earner, but I've found no issue with their cards, rewards or benefits.  To some people, they may be mediocre or "subpar" but that's why there's other institutions to chose from.

At the end of the day, we're all grateful for a free enterprise economy which provides the viability for being able to choose what we want and those products that benefit our lifestyles.  Whether that means a customer who is starting out, rebuilding, optimizing some rewards or SUB, or even complementing their profile for the long term.  I'm definitely not ashamed of carrying their product.

There, my .02 cents Smiley Happy

Not really sure what you mean here.

Penfed is pretty annoying because of their ways. I don't really that much of an issue with any other card company (other than C.O). I mean I do think 5/24 from Chase and delayed rewards from AMEX are irritating, but those aren't that big of a deal, and I currently have a bunch of AMEX cards and respect Chase's reasoning behind the 5/24 policy.

I'm just curious as to what makes people choose Capital One when there are superior products out there with the same underwriting criteria.

At any rate, superior is really subjective.  What you are aiming for versus what someone else is aiming for is going to differ in general.  Someone can feel that a NASA $30K CC with their rewards is superior to them, or a Capital Venture (metal core or otherwise for those that enjoy bling) is superior to them.

To expand further, I don't go every day thinking "Oh my gosh, I forgot to place that purchase on my "superior" Ritz card or my "superior" Prestige card or maybe I should have used my "superior" AMEX Platinum (insert your favorite affinity) or my BOA Accolades AMEX?  It's all relative when it comes what individuals feel is "superior" to them, whether it's a CSR, Hyatt, Aviator, Merrill+, NFCU Flagship, AMEX of choice, Diners Club (ooops no longer offered), CU of choice (enter your favorite) or the rewards system or relationship in general.  I don't consider the flavor or status to achieve my financial goals at the end of the day.  I find a product, relationship, longetivity enough to be superior in my book.

Good list.

The CU's are fine options if one can qualify for membership.  I don't qualify for NavyFed or USAA.  To qualify for PenFed, I'd have to join Voices for America's Troops (which I could certainly embrace), but that's akin to an annual fee (tho' a nominal one).

The PayPal card appears to be a solid offering.  Personally, I avoid PayPal because it's not (yet) subject to the same U.S. regulation as banks are, and I've read horror stories of PayPal freezing funds.

Re: Again, why do people care about Capital One?

Unless you are a builder or rebuilder Cap One is the worst. Their retail banking products are just as terrible, I’ll never forget opening up a checking account with them (at the time they were the only big bank doing no foreign transaction fees on international atm and just took over Chevy Chase). That experience was a huge turn off for me. Anyway terrible customer service in the bank and terrible card service with terrible rewards. They are exclusively a sub bank imo, yet people still use them Smiley Happy

Re: Again, why do people care about Capital One?

What's in your sock drawer?

For me, CO Platinum (now QS) was my first card.  Second was GM Card.  Both of these would be "rebuilder" cards.  Got a third because pre-approval and wanted to load up on my accounts reporting.

Eventually, I will probably close them all.  For now they stay minimal spend, just to have more positive accounts reporting.

Re: Again, why do people care about Capital One?

I love my Quiksilver because of so many reasons. 50% off on my Spotify subscription and a discount on Uber and concert tickets are some of the perks I like. I also like their app and that gas purchases deduct from available credit right away so I can see them. Customer service is always nice to me. They are one of a few cars so decided to keep. Not a super fan of citi or chase and their big bank attitudes but to each their own. I like the 0% interest rate for 15 months on purchases and bt’s and 150 cash bonus after 500 spend in 3 months that the us bank cash rewards card is currently offering myself! 😊

Different strokes for different folks. As for the Simplicity, the Freedom and Freedom Unlimited provide 0% interest for 15 months along with $150-$300 in cash. Plus cash back on purchases. A perk of Simplicity is no late fees but, while it doesn't pubicize it, Capitol One regularly waives interest fee penalties for customers with good track records. The Thankyou Premier only offers 30,000 points whereas I can get 50,000+ from multiple Chase and Amex cards. The Prestige comes with a $450 fee and its perks are inferior to the Amex Platinum, Amex Aspire and Chase Sapphire Reserve. Double Cash is the most appealing card for my needs. But even then, it doesn't move the needle much.

Amex Gold, Amex Bonvoy, Amex Hilton Honors Surpass, Amex Every Day, Amex Hilton Biz, Amex Delta Biz, Barclays Arrival+, Barclays Rewards, Capital One VentureOne, Capital One Quicksilver, Chase Freedom, Chase IHG Rewards, Chase United Explorer, Chase Sapphire
