Alternate Amazon Card: AFCU’s Cash Rewards Visa

I just recently joined Affinity Federal Credit Union for their SmartStart Savings account, and now I’m mulling over their Cash Rewards credit card. Is anyone else familiar with this card?

I’ve been planning to get a 5% Amazon card and have been leaning towards the Chase Prime Visa (in January 2021), but after seeing this AFCU card, I’m leaning more towards this one. The card isn’t anything too special: 5% at all bookstores including Amazon.com (capped at $3,500 a month) as well as 2% back at restaurants, gas stations, and supermarkets, and 1% on everything else. HOWEVER, they recently added 5% rotating categories, which is ON TOP of what you already earn. For example, they had 5% on grocery and streaming services for April – June, meaning you earned 7% on grocery and 6% on streaming. Right now, July – September, the category is Clothing & Home Furnishing and from October – December it’s Bookstores & Discount retailers (so it looks like 10% at Amazon). Also, this card doesn’t require a Prime membership to get 5% at Amazon, and there is no longer an annual fee.

I haven’t found any information here on MyFico, so I was looking at Doctor of Credit and the comments there seem to confirm all of the above. From what I have read, AFCU sounds like they are very conservative though, so I was hoping anyone familiar with the CU and/or card can chime in. I have been gardening for a year and recently opened the AMEX BCP card (8/1). It was a SP approval and it likely won’t report until end of September, early October. Does it seem like a likely approval for me? Despite gardening for a year, I have opened many accounts in the prior year, trying to establish my credit profile.

ETA - If anyone is familiar with this card, what are the pros and cons?

Re: AFCU’s Cash Rewards Visa® Signature Credit Card

Got to admit this looks like a pretty nice card. Along with 5% off Amazon with no Prime membership required and 5% rotating categories, it is also has no FTF, cell phone protection, a low 12.5% APR, and a pretty good $200 for $3k spend SUB.

IMO this looks like the best card you can get for Amazon now.

That's what I was thinking! My trigger finger is itching lol, but I like to weigh all my options before making a decision. I just don't want any surprises later on and regret applying for it.

Just know the 5% rotating categories was introduced this yr. Some ppl question if it's a one yr thing.

Yes, I was wondering that myself. But it's not necessarily a dealbreaker for me if they drop it, since I'm primarily interested in a 5% card I can use on Amazon. The rotating categories are definitely a bonus though, and 10% at Amazon in the last quarter would be awesome.

Paging @ChazzieT since I see this card on your signature wishlist...

Re: AFCU’s Cash Rewards Visa® Signature Credit Card

Sadly, it's there in my "goal cards". I'll be going for it after I get my US Bank Cash+, in December.

I can confirm everything you said, through research directly with Affinity. I have been a member since January and call them up periodically and ask the same set of questions. So far, 6 different front line CSR's have quoted it just like you said and one said the hi5 program wasn't stackable, but acquiesced when I pointed him to where it said that on their web page.

As far as the Hi 5 program going away, a point of clarity: the program existed prior to January, but it only applied to the debit card on a checking account. It was added to credit cards in January, but I don't know if it was removed from debit cards, as I don't have one. Not sure how long it was around as debit card bonus, before January.
