Am Ex point values

Can anyone roughly equate AM Ex points to dollar values  when you shop at their site?  If one has 50,000 points, would that buy $100.00 in merchandise?  More?  Less?  Can you redeem your Am Ex points for gift cards of different values?

From what I have read on the AMEX site 20,000 points adds up to a $100 gift card, someone correct me if I am wrong, but I am just saving my points.
