I have the same question but do closed cards of American Express that I chose to cancel AFTER I paid them off in full count as the lifetime number of cards I can have. 🤔

I believe it's 5 open cards that you're allowed to have regardless how many you've closed in the past (assuming that you haven't opened and clsoed an extremely large amount of Amex cards). Someone correct me if I'm wrong, though.

It's only open revolving accounts.  The 5 cards is still very much YMMV though.
