Are you certain of this?
While it's possible there's been a recent change, numerous sites say you must charge your purchase to the card to earn points, and that you don't earn points when you pay with points. This is why most people are advising to cash out.
That makes sense. Thank you for informing me. Everything is clear now, learn something new everyday...

Not a fool at all... this stuff can be confusing. ![]()
FWIW there has been a change to the cash redemption that some of the 'fine print' hasn't been updated to reflect... there used to be a $20 minimum, but they did away with that. I redeemed $5 just last week. ![]()
Here's a thread with more details: https://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit-Cards/Amazon-Rewards-Visa-No-Minimum-Redemption/m-p/5296893

As I just commented on the gift cards with Amex thread, it's a more general issue. If:
a) there is no discount for using rewards (e.g. a $25 gift card/purchase costs the equivalent of $25) and
b) there is a cashback option
it's generally better to take the cash back, and then make the purchase and earn rewards on the purchase.
With cards with silly (technical term) reward structures like double cash, you have issues like avoiding statement credit and doing ACH instead.
These things are small but add up over time.
I'd call it a cash card that happens to use points. Move the decimal point two places to the left, and your points become cash.
I redeem my points into my bank account when the card statement cuts. That keeps me from accidentally redeeming them on Amazon and not getting the 5%. It's also slightly easier bookkeeping (in my opinion) than taking a card statement credit. I redeemed 62 cents recently.
Don't confuse the credit card points with Amazon gift points. If you've purchased gift points with your Chase card, you've already earned your 5%. You've also earned your 5% if your gift points have come as the result of a refund and you used your Chase card for that purchase.

It's an aha-moment for me, when Uppernewguy said that's just crazy, I didn't know what he meant lol. But now, I clearly understand it now. So, I get cashback to my checking account, then I use the card to get 5% for the purchase, instead of just using it towards the purchase as points and not getting the 5% although, I will be using the card but technically it won't come out of pocket.

How often do you cash out the money lol? I have maybe a hundred or so in cash back rewards lol.
I cash out right after the statement cuts and the points show up, even if the amount is minuscule. If I don't do that, it's inevitable that I'll "cash out" by accidentally using the points to make an Amazon purchase.
