American Express PRG....ever really a keeper card?

Considering picking up the Amex PRG card. Admittedly, largely for the SUB. Seems like if you look around, every few weeks there is a 50k MR SUB for $2k spend. But I do a lot of spending on gas, groceries, and dining out...which makes this card kind of appealing. Usually I'm spending $1200/month is those categories.

Any card with a good SUB makes sense the first year, but is it really a card worth keeping after 2-3 years with that $195 AF? I'm not really a churner, and would like to keep a high AAoA.  I know I can likely use the $100 travel credit (twice in the first membership year?) to get some gift cards, bringing down the AF to effectively $95.  I suppose my concern is it gives decent points on everyday, but really isn't a good travel card as you have to book through AMEX's travel portal to see good returns on hotel and airline bookings.

Anyone have the PRG and love it, or do most grab the SUB and cancel second year?

Airlines are 3x on PRG when booked directly with airlines, as well.  Amex Offers can be quite lucrative!  Between the credits and the Amex Offers, my Platinum and PRG more than pay for themselves right now.

If you use the travel credit.
It’s a net $95 AF which puts it in line with other cards such as CSP, and citi Premier.
It really comes down to your spend but it’s very much an everyday use card.

You can use Amex’s travel portal but you can book flights directly with the airline for 3X points. Again the value of this, really comes down to your spend. If your considering this card for the 3X on airlines the platinum would be a much better fit.

I will be renewing my PRG come November.

If eligible for business cards I would opt personally for the Business Blue Plus over the PRG personally as no AF and earns 2 MR on anything up to 50k..  My poor ED card just sits collecting dust after the release of the BBP card.  Platinum is a whole different beast mainly used for perks and 5x's on airlines.  Just my 2 cents.

Re: American Express PRG....ever really a keeper card?

This card is a loser.  In typical Amex fashion, they took what should have been a $95 card and made it $195 to give it the illusion of prestige and luxury.  They then added a silly $100 airline incidental credit, officially to be used only for expenses that most normal cardholders would never incur.  Amex was clearly looking for breakage.  The fact that some cardholders are able to gain the $100 credit by purchasing gift cards -- gift cards that are explicitly prohibited by the terms and conditions -- doesn't make it right.

Re: American Express PRG....ever really a keeper card?

When I had the PRG it was a pretty good card but for my personal spending EDP made more sense for me because of the potential for 4.5x on groceries and 3x on gasoline when you meet the 30 snipes a month which usually isn’t a problem. The 50k SUB for 2k spending wasn’t really bad very easy to meet. Also i was able to use the airline credit when I changed my AA/CX from J to F.

Yes, Amex Offers great! Additionally, the card has good purchase protections and premium roadside assistance included. Important to note: Hotels would only be 2x if booked through portal(but if you get The Hotel Collection you get a $75 credit) and 4x on flights(amex displays 2x on Amextravel, but that just means 1 additional point on base earnings). I think all around it is great card because the PRG bonus categories are 75%+ of my yearly spend.

@UpperNwGuy  I don't mean to come across as though I'm tearing your post apart (it is far from being a perfect travel card so I understand the points you're making), but what they actually did was take the $160 AF Gold card, raise the AF by $35, and add slightly better reward earning and the $100 airline credit.  Amex certainly doesn't have the best travel reimbursement game in town, but "normal cardholders" certainly incur baggage and similar fees.  It's very easy to use the $100 credit (or $200 on Platinum) for someone who flies Spirit, for instance, as it'll cover the $5 emergency oxygen mask fee, the $15 armrest fee, the $10 "Free IFE" access fee, $25 cabin pressurization surcharge, etc.  Smiley Wink

Re: American Express PRG....ever really a keeper card?

With any of these cards.....it all depends on how you use it. I myself am a fan of charge cards and am rebuilding, only have an AMEX Green Card right now, but I'm running my entire life through it. Another 6 months until I can upgrade to the PRG which I cannot wait to do.

I have my Dad on my Green Card as an Authorized User and he spends a ton of money on gas. I could really rack up some serious points on the 2X back for Gas, Supermarkets, and Restaurants. Not to mention my hotel stays when I'm visiting family, by the way that's another offer that is pretty sweet. 2X Points + $75 dining/other hotel amenities credit if you stay 2 consecutive nights at an AMEX Hotel Collection Hotel.

I dunno, it all depends on how you use these cards in the end. I personally love AMEX and just the idea of charge cards, PRG will be perfect for me. I could makeup that $195 AF in no time. I can totally see for others though how it wouldn't be the right choice though.
