I think it depends on when and what amount your CO had occured.
I've read some cases where after 20 years, Amex has approved cards with a CO; whereas in other cases, even after 30 years, they still refuse to offer a card without the prior debt cleared.
I had a CO in 2000, Opened A Zync card last month. It took a few days but when I logged in it says "Member Since 1999" It was close to $2000 charge off
I respectfully disagree, I'm sure that Amex is very aware of your past issues. If u call in to regular cs you can be tRansfered to the correct dept. if the first person isn't helpful ask for a supervisor, any time ive had an issue it's taken a supervisor who knew what they were doing to help.

I wouldn't push the backdating issue with them then. If they give to you that's awesome but don't poke the bear.

This sounds most reasonable. AmEx seems to be cracking down on backdating.
In the past if you added an AU (authorized user), AmEx would report the date the account was opened for the AU the same as for the responsible cardholder. I called last week and they said they no longer do this, now they will report the opening date for the AU as the date they were added. I've had my AmEx for years, but in adding my fiancee, his opening date would report as July 2012 for example. I am still trying to investigate further. Has anyone had any very recent experience with this?
AmEx said it is still current policy to backdate the date of opening for new cards to the date of first AmEx activity. So if you had an AmEx card in 2000 and you open another in 2012, it will report as if you had opened the new card in 2000.
Also note the newest FICO algorithem only factors in AU benefits for those residing in the same household. Luckily most creditors aren't using this scoring model so AU tactics may still provide benefits to those not in the same household. I've been told to expect treatment of this issue to continue to evolve.
