Re: Amex Oasis - Updates/Experiences

Well I wanted to post that the oasis program is still in existence but getting someone who will enroll you in it seems to be the challenge. I have a friend who had a charged off Amex card and with the delinquency fees and late charges adding 1100$ to the balance he owed just shy of 10k. We got him enrolled this morning and once it is paid he "should" receive an optima card but no one could say for sure what the limit would be. On a side note I have spoken to 5 separate people in the Amex executive office and none of them has heard of a secured card program with Amex at this time. If anyone can find someone who has heard of this program or can provide the name and number of anyone who knows of this program I would love to hear from you. I had an Amex platinum and when I had reached 742$ one month back in 1996 they asked for a FR. I said no, not for a card with a 495$ fee and excellent pymt history and a large sum of cash sitting in a money market acct untouched for 6 years. I got a refund check for my membership rewards points and a pro-rate refund on my membership fee but not before I made a huge stink about it. Amex can be a great company but I still remember what I was told in college when I got my first credit card..." Make them work for you, don't work to pay them." if a credit or charge card can be useful to me then I want it but once it becomes a liability kick it to the curb. Life is too short for financial reviews and rate jacks and especially arbitrary cld's.

Re: Amex Oasis - Updates/Experiences

*** UPDATE ***

Well, here is my latest update.  I was DECLINED for the Zync card.

Now I was not upset at the fact that I was declined for the Zync card.  What I was upset about was the reason I was declined.  I was declined because my bankruptcy was "too new" and I would need to wait until my bankruptcy falls off of my credit report prior to reapplying.

For those that had been following me on this topic, I'm sure you saw the steam coming out of my ears as I was passed pissed off.  Here is why.  Now, this entire time I have been speaking with AMEX they knew about my Chapter 7 bankruptcy.  They knew I had included them in the chapter 7 bankruptcy as that is what all of our conversations were based around.  Anyhow, as you all probably know, after speaking with them, I had decided to pay restitution of the $800 that was discharged in bankruptcy in an effort to get my AMEX back, and then they denied me based on the same bankruptcy that we had spoken about.

I so kindly asked them to reverse that charge of restitution.  I explained to them that they could have told me prior to me making a payment that there is "no exceptions" to their rule about having a bankruptcy on your credit report.  (which of course I know there has to be based on other posters, but they may have just slipped through the cracks).

I explained to them that it was not right for them to basically "lead me on" into thinking that with paying restitution I would be eligible for an account with AMEX when the entire reason for my calls and letter was based around the bankruptcy and we even discussed all this information by phone.  I will say that the lady in the executive branch is extremely nice and was just relaying what the underwriters are telling her.  But none the less, she said she would have to see what can be done about that, so I have a feeling I will have a bit of a fight on my hands with that charge.

I told them that I will be happy to pay them restitution in 7 years once the bankruptcy has fallen off my credit report and they are willing to do business with me.  I told her that if underwriting knew that there were no "exceptions" to this bankruptcy rule, then when they reviewed my account the very first time prior to our conversation of restitution that should have been explained.

So, anyhow, just thought I'd give everyone an update.

Wow, Taze, that really sucks!

Have there been others on the forum who have reported success with BK on their credit reports?  I haven't been keeping track.

Re: Amex Oasis - Updates/Experiences

Sorry to hear that Smiley Sad

Creditcards.com lists the Zync as a card for "Excellent Credit" ...  Smiley Frustrated   Click here - >  Zync "review"

I hope you got some of this in writing and if so,  I don't see why you wouldn't get the  money back.

I feel for you because I used to be in "exodus island" for 10 years...   but you should definitely write  a formal letter if you don't get traction in this case. they can't lead ppl on like that.

Re: Amex Oasis - Updates/Experiences

I received my letter of denial in the mail yesterday from AMEX.  Of course I knew the reason they denied me was because of the bankruptcy, but here is my "custom" denial letter paragraph's that were interesting.

When making the decision about your application, we reviewed several pieces of information including your consumer credit report(s).  Att his time, you do not meet the credit criteria for the zync Card.  The specific reason is because you recently filed for bankruptcy.  When we spoke to you on October 8, 2010, we let you know we appreciated your voluntary payment on a previously closed account but that payment would not guarantee approval for a new Card.  We explained that the criteria to be approved for a new Card is an overall review of your credit history, including informatin in your credit report.

We would like to remind you about our offer for the Secured Card.  We mentioned this Card to you when you initially contacted us, and we'd be happy to discuss it further with you.  Please call us at 1-800-------- if you are interested or if you have questions about your application mentioned above.  You may also write us at the above address.

So, anyhow, I've already contacted them (as per my previous posting) regarding the refund of the payment.  I explained to them that yes, I understood making a voluntary payment would not guarantee me a card, but it was implied that by making the voluntary payment, then my bankruptcy (which was the whole reason AMEX was contacted) would not be considered as restitution was being paid, yet that was the only reason they used to deny me.  So, I will let you all know how that goes, but based on my previous conversation, AMEX doesn't want to do business with anyone that still has a bankruptcy showing on their credit report no matter if they suffered a loss or not.  Which, like I said, had they just said that upfront, then it would have been a done issue verses leading me to believe that paying restitution would permit me to qualify for a card that they are now saying I had absolutely no chance to get because of the bankruptcy.  And they put in bold letters talking about the secured card, but they want a minimum of $10,000 in a CD that is paying an interest rate substatially lower than my credit union.

okiesean:  were you able to get more information on the secured card with AMEX?  I didn't look too much into it after I saw the whole interest rate thing and with them saying they are not willing to do business with me until the bankruptcy falls off, I don't even know if I would have "qualified" for the secured card either.

Re: Amex Oasis - Updates/Experiences

*** UPDATE ***

Well, I talked with AMEX and they have agreed to reverse the restition amount that I paid to them.  The young lady was EXTREMELY NICE and apologized that they were not able to offer me a card with AMEX at this time.  We talked about the bankruptcy and she said that right now it would likely be about 2015 with AMEX's current guidelines before I could get anything.  She did make it clear though that AMEX does not discourage people from applying, but she just wanted me to know about my situation and that everyone's situation is different.  I told her that I appreciated that.  So, anyhow, even though I was declined to get a card with AMEX (which was my ultimate goal), I will be able to use those funds elsewhere and then when I do qualify for an AMEX, I will be happy to pay restitution and move forward.
