Amex Plan of Action

I know its early but I like to plan ahead. I received Green in April but want BCP as my next card. Used Green exclusively on a recent trip to NYC and put about 5k on the card and have been charging about $1500 per month. I would like to show at least twelve months of 1k - 2k per month of history before applying. Do I request to cancel Green before the AF is due or should I wait and app for BCP before attempting to close Green. BTW 750's. Thanks in advance.

I'm confused why you can't get the BCP now?

I agree. Looks like way too much overthinking here. BCP is in the bag! Smiley Wink And if you want to cancel the Green wait until you activate the new card.

Re: Amex Plan of Action

I would apply for the BCP before closing the Green card (maybe a couple of months before) then close down the Green card.  If you apply for another card with American Express while you already have a card with them, its only a hard pull if you get approved.  Also, the new one will for sure automatically backdate...some people on here (like myself) have had to request to have their new AMEX cards backdated after not having an AMEX for quite some time.

Having 11 or even 10 months of spending about 1-2k per month on your Green would show a lot to AMEX and I don't think it would be any different then if you waited a full year to apply for BCP and had to pay the AF on the Green.  You could always call at 12 months when the AF is coming up and say you want to close the card because of the AF and AMEX might be able to waive the fee for you.

Re: Amex Plan of Action

The reason I was going to wait is because of a recent app spree. I figured 5 inquiries would be pushing my luck. Maybe I am being overly sensitive to inquiries, but that is not what Citi said. Ugh.....

BTW, I'm new to the rewards game but eager to learn.

Same job for the last 24 years and credit since '87.

Re: Amex Plan of Action

1. Citi can you know!
2. You are a cardmember - decline = no Inq.
3. You are a cardmember, Amex fees your apps differently the. A cold app and 5 is not many Inq. By next year you could be requesting your second 3x CLI on this Blue!!
Not to mention the bonus available now might be gone next year.
