It is quite possible. I had a Delta Platinum for a while this year, along with the Delta Gold, and the cards are joined at the hip for the SkyMiles account. I did not see any details about sharing the purchase / MQM miles, but I didn't look extremely closely either, because I was only just making Silver Medallion last year.
It is certain the Delta Platinum does boost you toward those MQM.
If it isn't easy to locate in the fine print, you could call AMEX back, get a different CSR, and ask the question. If it's a quick yes, then a lock that is the case.
Was there a required spending amount for the first "eligible" purchase?
A clarifying question: When you say you are upgrading to "Platinum" is that the AMEX Platinum card or the Delta Platinum SkyMiles card?
