Amex advice?

I currently have the Amex Platinum Delta card which has a 40K CL on it. I don't really use delta anymore though so this delta card is not really very beneficial for me. Ideally I want to get rid of this card and opt for the regular Amex Platinum card which is more appealing to me. However the Delta card is my highest CL and also one of my oldest accounts so getting rid of it would make a HUGE dent in my credit score/history. I also don't like the thought of having 2 high annual premium cards from Amex when I don't need both at the same time...

I checked today and I'm pre-approved for the Amex plat card if I choose to get it. Any way I could get just the Amex plat without taking a huge credit hit? Am I just stuck with the Delta card forever?

Re: Amex advice?

If I'm understanding your question correctly the yes, you can get the Amex Platinum and it has no affect on your Delta Platinum card.  If you want keep your current account and limit then downgrade you Delta Plantinum to maybe the Delta Gold or the no annual fee Delta Blue.

Re: Amex advice?

There is a no annual fee Delta Blue?? I don't see it on the Amex website's list of cards. That's exactly what I was looking for.

Also this may be asking for a lot but it's probably impossible to "upgrade" or switch products from Delta to regular platinum right so I have to have to pull credit?

Re: Amex advice?

The Amex Platinum is a charge card so getting it wont boost your credit score like another credit card. You will simply be going down if you close your delta platinum. Now if you were to goto another credit card instead of a charge card. You could ask if they can transfer your CL to another card. I DO NOT KNOW if amex does this but I know Chase will transfer. Maybe someone here knows.

I only use my Amex Platinum card for the rewards. I don't actually use it to buy anything. Instead I use Amex Gold Rewards, Amex Business Lowes, and Amex Business plus card to build points. Then Amex Platinum to use them. I don't know how your spending is but for me it pays for itself.

Re: Amex advice?

Could you explain what you mean by "using the Amex Platinum to use up the points"? The point system for all your Amex cards are tied together?

Re: Amex advice?

You could ask to PC down to one of the other delta cards. Closing the card is another option. It will remain on your bureaus for the next 10 years.

Blue Delta, Gold Delta or Delta Reserve. Blue Delta has no AF. Gold card AF waived first year then $95, Reserve has a hefty $450 AF. Would not suggest.

AX Hilton Aspire 20k, AX Bonvoy Brilliant 15k, AX BCP 2k, AX Blue Bus Cash 15k, AX Delta Air Platinum 49k, (AU) AX Delta Gold 15k, AX Amazon Prime Bus 25k, BC Uber 29k, AKUSA FCU -10k , CITI AAdvantage Exec World Elite MC 16.5k, Discover (2) 16k, Kohls-4k, VS Comenity $3k, BofA AK Air Siggy 9.8k, WF Propel AX 5k, JCP $10k PFCU Plat Rewards Siggy 39.5k, PFCU Power Cash Rewards AX 10.5k, NFCU Flagship 50k, CLOC 15k, CITI Costco 9.5k, GAP VISA Synchrony $9k,Target MC 9k, Ulta MC Comenity 9k, Pay Pal 1k, CO Venture One 23k, US Bank Radisson Rewards Signature 10k, US Bank Fred Meyers World MC, 11k, US Bank Plat VISA 15.7k, VS Comenity 2k, 240k total available credit. Re: Amex advice?

I would keep the Delta and down grade it to the lowest annual fee version .... If you get the Amex Platinum with the Delta on your credit file you will take less of a hit......For now I would say your stuck within that cobranded tier if you want to keep your AAOA the highest possible with new approvals

I would PC down to the blue Delta card to avoid an annual fee until you decide what you want to do. If you find that the credit would be more useful on another Amex card down the road, you can always open another card and reallocate some of the Delta's limit to it, but not the Platinum, since it's a charge card with no preset spending limit.

Re: Amex advice?

Yes, actually that makes sense. I keep forgetting I can't "carry" over a CL to a charge card.

Re: Amex advice?

Thanks for advice. Makes sense.

Also I've been wondering, should I consider the gold primier card instead of the platinum card for now? Not doing too much traveling nowadays. The gold primier annual fee is more comparible to the delta platinum card. I was thinking maybe I should stick with the gold card for now and upgrade to the platinum when I start traveling more? I like the fact that the platinum cards are metalic now though but that doesn't really justify the additional $350 a year on fees xD.
