Certainly it's good for all companies to be somewhat respectful of their customers.   However, I personally don't find the small fish now, master-of-the-universe later argument that compelling, simply because, almost by definition the vast majority of small fish stay small fish!

I didn't say anything about master of the universe. I'm not talking about the 1% crowd when I talk about successful. More like college student/part time worker now compared with successful professional, doctor/lawyer/ceo later in life.

Doctor and CEO would be 1% and a lot of attorney's would be as well.

You have to remember who you're talking to, LTL is a .1 percenter. lol

He doesn't see it the way you 1 percenters see it. Smiley Wink

I get the pop ups for certain CC's now. Just started seeing it this week.

I've closed an Amex Delta Gold roughly 3 months ago. Opened a Amazon Business card one month ago.

I have 5 revolvers as well. I am prequalified for the charge cards...who would have guessed. lol

Re: Amex denying SUBs

While I do feel the CCC created this trend of SUB chasers by vying for their business, they are aslo trying to put in place measure to stop it at the expense of normal people. Anyone who apps for a product simpy for the SUB, then closes it before the AF doesn't demonstrate that they're customer looking for longevity with said issuer. So why should they care or cater to them?

When I apped the BCE I didn't even realize there was one, I was just looking to get in with Amex and broaden my CC diversity. However, I recently looked back and I indeed did meet it. Which is shocking because I thought that I just threw it in the SD for a couple months prior to use, and then not much after.

It wasn't until later and reseaching that you could get decent SUBs with certain cards. Which prompted me to app for the PRG w/50K MRs, as well as the Delta Gold. Unfortunately I was still new to the program so i didn't quite realize miles and points were not the same thing, not to mention Delta wasn't really a good fit for me locally. I should have apped for something else, or just waited until I better understood the points vs miles game. I had been looking at getting a Charge Card for a while, and while the SUB probably is what helped push me there. I wouldn't really call me a SUB chaser, as I didn't app card after card strictly for it then close them after.

I merely thought they would be a nice tool in offsetting my vacation costs. Though at that time the PRG worked better for me due to the lower AF and Airline credit. So it wasn't really all about the SUB here. It just sweetend the pot. Then much later the ED app was more geared toward getting a certain SUB, while at the same time a Card with BT APR. I don't think there is a card in my wallet that i got strictly for the SUB.

Then when I apped for the Hilton because of the increaded SUB a few months back, and a pop up saying that I wasn't eligible. Made me feel as if I was a SUB chaser, or at least how I was seen by them. After all, I had no real plans for future use of that card beyond the vacation. They just don't have hardly any properties near me nor does Starwood, which is why I've never apped them before. So this was the only instance where I felt the SUB was my only drivng force behind the decision. I primarily stay at Choice and Wyndham properties, and we all know how Barclays is. lol

Re: Amex denying SUBs

To add insult to injury Amex just sent me pre approved offer for 50k 2k spend with no language of not being able to receive sub if had card prior. That's a big ouch . They know how twist the knife while it's still in your back lol

No that is not true. Top 10% yes. Top 1% no. To be in the 1% you have to have an individual annual income of $300K+ with a net worth of over $10 million. I know many attorneys, doctors and CEOs who don't make that type of money. Sure there are some that do, but nowhere near the entire profession or anywhere close to that.

I don't know how much of a win for Amex it is for someone to sign up expecting, and then not getting, the bonus.   It obviously annoys at least some of the impacted customers (e.g. this thread!) and will often result in calls, perhaps multiple, to the issuer, which all cost money as well.    And a disgruntled user may cancel or SD the card, so the issuer gets no benefit after the AF (if any) and the min spend.

My guess is it is in their interest to be as accurate as possible, so people who proceed after being told that they won't get one are a) aware and b) believe it is still worthwhile.   These could be "good" long-term users.     One major issue is that once you put the pop-up, people understandably assume that its absence indicates that they will get the bonus, and experience shows otherwise.  (OPs situation here is worse, as a CSR stated the account was going to get a bonus)

 This.

I had every intention of continuing to use several of my Amex cards well after having gotten the welcome bonus from them.  And, while I wasn't happy to see it, I appreciate them giving me a pop-up saying that I would be ineligible for a welcome bonus on my most recent app.  I have definitely been a SUB chaser with them, so fair play on that.  I've even considered apping for a BBP despite being ineligible for the 10K referral offer because I see it as a valuable card long term.

The one thing that doesn't sit well with me, though, is how they can choose to not honor a bonus after saying they would.  That is bad faith and bad business, and it makes me question whether I can trust them to honor other commitments, and whether I should continue to use their cards at all.

I was talking income and most people I know have spouses who work. I highly doubt too many doctors and CEO's with working spouses dont' have family income over 300k. If you are specialist you make significantly more.

Re: Amex denying SUBs

IMO, Amex treats everyone fairly.  Concerns about subs are on forums like these where people tend to chase cards for subs then close them.

Most applying for Amex cards don’t have to worry.

Personal Cards: Amex Plat | Amex Delta Res | CSR | Citi AA Exec Business Cards: Ink+ | Amex BGR

Re: Amex denying SUBs

Chiming in that I was also having this issue when applying for my BCE. After many weeks, I finally got ahold of a high enough rep on the phone that decided to notate my account. She said she’d personally set it in her calendar to reward me the SUB upon the end of the third month. I’m at month 2 and have reached the minimum spend for a while, so I’m just playing the waiting game for now.

I had only the SimplyCash Business before the BCE. No other Amex cards in my history, no closed accounts or anything. The rep was bewildered, and that’s why she decided to take the issue into her own hands. Was also told an investigation would be done by the IT department. No news back about that, so for now I’m just biding my time.

Will report back with an update soon.

Should also mention I had every intention of keeping the card, and have stuck with that since receiving the CL that I did. I mostly wanted to get my foot into the door with Amex’s personal cards. The sign-up bonus was just that, a bonus.

Re: Amex denying SUBs

At least in my annecdotal experience if you put some spend on an existing amex  the " you are not eligible for bonus" popup messages seemed to go away. Initially i got them for practically every app attempt whether i had the card previously or not. Got bonus for Gold and MS credit card.

amex - plat + bcp, Apple Card, Citi Prestige (AU)
