In the last week I have been refused using Amex as a payment more than in the last decade. Granted most of the places were small businesses i.e. cafes, but even Del Taco refused to accept Amex!
Is this a sign of mass revolt?
In my experience, it only has been small business that doesn't take AMEX. Which is fine, I can understand that. I can't imagine the charge up that they have to pay for, and in this economy people are having to tighten up their wallets where they can. Even regional chain stores I would think fall in this category. The only places I know will always accept my AMEX is your national/international chains. And I suppose your expensive boutique's.
And that's why you always carry VISA/MC with you as well.
I have not noticed anything remotely like what you are describing. I use my Amex for 99% of all my transactions. I've only ran into 2 places I visit that don't accept Amex, one is my doctor and the other is a local ballpark. In both cases I just use my Discover.
Not sure what a Del Taco is, but doesn't exactly sound like the target market for Amex consumers... Lol.
a lot of mom and pop places in CT dont take amex or discover. Atleast with amex they have the special offer deals, 3x cli, and backdating. All I have ever gotten for my discover it card was a 5 dollar starbucks card. Thanks but no thanks.

+1, love AMEX EveryDay - really can't explain why I reach for it first =P

Its understandable. But if i could do it over again i would have went with amex over discover. Discover does not do enough to keep my business compared to chase.
Haven't really run into any issues in Northern CA, except for the smaller "mom & pop" stores. My views on this is pretty simple. Every merchant has a right accept whatever form of payment they deem fitting, and I can equally choose the form of payment I prefer and walk out.
For me, for any establishment who restricts my form of payment had better have something pretty special where I can't find elsewhere.

My amex is only on groceries duty like whole foods and trader joes ,they can handle the swipe fees lol
Anyone find the irony that a lot of small mom and pop stores don't accpet Amex, but Amex markets "Small Business Saturday?" I run into this from time to time and this marketing campaign always pops into my head.
