So I had an amex plat for like two or three years and have had them in the past as well. The AF hit and when there was no retention offer I downgraded to the green card.
Now almost immediately after downgrade I have an upgrade offer on the amex plat fo 50k points for 2k spend. I am tempted because if they had made me that retention offer I probably would have kept the plat.
Has anyone seen better UPGRADE offers? I can't apply for a new plat because I already had one. Obviously if I upgrade I'll have to hold on to the card for a second year to avoid clawbacks.
How long will the upgrade offer remain on the account? Will it eventually get pulled? Will it change over time?
Also I know they adjust the AF based on the amount of time left until renewal. What i don't know and am curious about is getting a second platnium card for my girlfriend. She travels quite a bit for work and could use the lounge access benefit. Also it would be helpful when we travel together and cheaper than having her get her own lounge card. Plus I know there is usually a signup bonus when you add a second plat card. If I add a second card and its less than a year until renewal is that $195 adjusted or is it $195 no matter how much time is left in the membership year?
Also, if I get my girlfriend a second platnium card on my account does that impact her ability to apply and get the SUB on her own platinum card in the future? It shouldn't but you never know with Amex.
Did you accept the offer?

I think the best upgrade offer I've ever seen while scouring the Internet for information about the Platinum card is 60k for 2k spend, but these offers are targeted and not open to negotiation. I'd probably take the 50k offer if I were in your shoes.
I did not know that adding extra cards have their own signup bonus. Is that standard or is that targeted? I got my lady a companion Platinum card just so she could get TSA Precheck for free, but I'd be open to getting her a full authorized user card if there really is a good SUB for it.
And as far as I can tell, being an authorized user doesn't preclude someone from getting a SUB on their own card down the road.

I got an upgrade offer on my Gold earlier this month for 125K after $6K spend in six months (I took it). That's the highest I've seen. Closed my first Platinum over a year ago in November 2023. Prior to this offer I only saw 25K and 50K offers in-app and on the Amex website, so higher offers are definitely targeted.
And you're right, AUs can get their own SUB in the future. Have your GF look around for the 150K-180K offers out there.

Approximately three years ago I charged 5k on a cruise with my platinum. Paid in full a week later. The following statement showed my spend was cut to 3k. In addition I've been in pop jail ever since. Needless to say bye bye pIatinum. Now I have the same offer you received. Good deal assuming Amex applies the prorated AF from the gold to the new platinum.

Not yet. I ended up applying for the citi strata card and getting approved so I will be spending on that a bit for awhile. Also, I don't have immediate travel planned so don't really want to eat the AF at this point. Will see how things develop over 2025, especially since I realized I can add my girlfriend as an AU on my Capital one venture x card and get her priority pass at no cost. Yes it doesn't offer as many lounges as amex but free is free. I'll revisit ther plat in the future but only when I know I will be able to maximize the benefit and make it worthwhile.
