This must have changed with a newer version of iOS. It is 8 cards max on the original Apple Pay, and apparently on iPhone 7 and earlier.
Now on iPhone 8 or later, or Apple Watch 3 or later, the Wallet can handle up to 12 credit cards. The addition of my Apple Card a few months ago makes 9 CC on my iPhone, and that does not count Apple Cash, which may make it 10.

Only My Fico'ers would care about this. Lol
Most people only have a few cards and wouldn't come close.

Does the # include passes?
I don't think so. I have something like a dozen passes, including Walgeens rewards card, Panera rewards, Delta SkyMiles membership card, multiple Starbucks cards, and those are all in a separate area of the Wallet. You scroll up or down, and look at either credit / payment cards as a group ( which should be the 8 or 12 ) and the Passes / membership cards as a group. I am not aware of a limit on number of passes.

True. The advantage is, some cards in corner cases can do good rewards, but if in the SD, can't be whipped out. Having them in the Apple Wallet is a convenience.

Yep. I use it for my BBR card mainly. I make a purchase using Apple Pay for like a dollar once a month on it so I can get 30$ every 3 months.
What's going on with a phone that the limit can't be 100 cards? How much storage space can a card's info possibly take up?
My Samsung S9+ can handle 10 cards.
