Are Flat Credit Cards Trending ??

I have recieved the new Discover IT card.  Slick packaging - not at all like the usual paper with rubber cement sticking to the card.

The card itself is very sleek - it almost looks like brushed titanium (though the effect is spoiled by the orange "it" logo on the side).

The most obvious difference with this card is the lack of embossing.  All of the information is printed on the back.  I guess it doesn't make any difference, because it has been many, many years since I had a credit card actually processed through an inprinting machine.

My question is: Is this style unique to Discover, or is it an emerging trend with card issuers?
Has anyone seen another major card that lacks the traditionally embossed information?

The VS Angel card is flat as well. Don't know of any others.

Re: Are Flat Credit Cards Trending ??

Personally, I hope so, since I like the having the information on the back much more--looks much more uncluttered.  The Citi Premier/Preferred Cards would look so much better if they only put the numbers in the back.

Re: Are Flat Credit Cards Trending ??

Many of the new Visa debit cards are also flat.

I don't think embossing will be as common going forward since it is no longer needed for imprints. It allows issuers more freedom in card design, so it seems that the IT has indeed jumped right into the beginning of a new trend.

In My Wallet: Amex BCP (12/12) $50,000, Chase Freedom (12/12) $16,500, Cap1 Quicksilver (6/12) $14,000, Barclaycard Rewards (5/13) $10,500, Citi Prestige (4/16) $30,000

Re: Are Flat Credit Cards Trending ??

Is there an extra cost in producing embossed cards? I suppose if there is one less step and/or machine involved in the "flat" cards, more issuers will likely trend to this style of card. Like you said, I have not seen an imprinter at any store in decades.
