Best Buy...here's a strange one..

So, mid August BF apped for BB. Thought he was apping for store card, that's what I told him to do, but he did it online and I don't know if he did something wrong, or if they just default you to whatever card they want. So, he gets message to call right away, or something strange like that. He calls, lady tells him approved for MC for a whopping $300. Oye. HSBC, $300 limit with an AF. I would never normally do this, but I was standing right there, and I said, tell them to forget it. He pushes a lot through that store every month, so a $300 card would be nothing more than an inconvenience for him. Most of his purchases are around that much, so it would max him out with each purchase, or maybe not be enough to cover it. So, I stood in front of him waving my arms around, giving him the thumbs down signal and just told him to tell them nevermind.

The only benefit woud be the Rewards Zone program which he's already a Silver member of, so...this was just no use to him. Again, not something I would normally do, but to pay an AF on a card that will be of no use at all and backed by el cheapo HCBC, just not worth it.

Well, we use my email address on all CC stuff, because I manage all bills and all alerts, etc. get sent to me. So, yesterday I get an email saying:

"Congratulations on becoming a Reward Zone® program MasterCard® cardmember. Look for your card in the mail soon. "

Huh?

Please tell me they didn't send him the card anyway. But if so, what the heck took them a month to do it?

Re: Best Buy...here's a strange one..

I applied for a BB card for my mother and she was denied and offered the BB mastercard as well with a 59.00 annual fee.  I called a couple of days later to find out the limit and it was a measly 300.00.  My mother would not accept that so I called to cancel.  The CSR transferred me to an account specialist who tried to persuade my mother to stay with them for another 150.00.  I was like that is not good enough she needs at least 1000.00 but 450.00 is all they would do.  I hope they don't send the card in the mail.

How long ago did you app for your mom? I was shocked it took a month just to get the email. If they were really going to send the card, I would think it would have come much sooner. Maybe it's just a fluke? Hopefully!

I did mine more than a year ago, they did take FOREVER to send the card. Anyway. I kept the card figuring for 1 year what the heck.

Started with 300, 6 months later went for CLI (denied, but gave me a 100 CLI???), 6 months later did the same thing and again denied but 100 CLI a few days later.

got charged the AF and I called them to "waive" it, I must have gotten a CSR who woke up on the wrong side.. He ripped me up and down, so I paid off the card and called today to tell them where to shove the card. I was transferred to the account specialist that waived the fee, apologized (it didn't matter) and when I brought up the paltry CLI and the denials gave me 300 CLI on the spot.

at this point, free card with 1 year history and still a so-so CL.. So I accepted it and figure I will play this game again in a few months when I go for another CLI. At this point nothing to lose as I have gained nothing either other than increasing the history with this card.

If I had to do it over again.. once I would have gotten the card I would have canceled it. Not worth the hassle in my opinion when you start out with 300 and a have a AF.

Thanks, Donk.  Your awful experience is exactly why I was doing my silly dance moves in front of him on the phone trying to tell him to say "NOOOOOO!" Smiley Very Happy  I am sure this will be the same experience he would have if he kept the card and it's not worth it.

On the flip side, I still have my orchard card for the same reason you mentioned above. They waive my fees and I keep the history. So, to me that's a win-win. When the stop waiving my AF, they can go in the shredder. For now, I'll keep the history rolling. Congrats on finally getting a CLI out of them.

Re: Best Buy...here's a strange one..

Hi all. I just got a BB card w/a $300 limit and a $59 AF as well, and I too thought I was applying for a store card. *DOH*
That said, after getting approved and sent the card you can cancel it? I was under the assumption you'd still owe the AF.
Either way I am not very thrilled with this 'generous' offer, I've never gotten a card with an AF before and it seems rather steep for such a chintzy limit.
Should I call & complain subtly? I have activated it because as I said I figured I'd still owe the fee.
But I have a few issues allready with the web site, the rewards & I can not load it onto my Quicken acct. Maybe I can whine just enough to at least get the AF waived?

I think in most cases you can cancel and not be responsible for the AF before activating the card. Not so sure about after, but it wouldn't hurt to call!

Re: Best Buy...here's a strange one..

At least you all got a card from Best Buy, they denied me in a record 2.75 seconds online for the store card and did not offer me anything. Odd thing is I have an HSBC card, that I have always paid on time and allowed a small amount so they make a little in interest. (And so it reports a 10 percent usage) Fargin bastiges!

Maybe I will wait until Christmas and apply for a Circuit City card, I heard Chase is better than HSBC anyway. Smiley Happy

Um, Chase is a million times better than HSBC.  So yeah, hold off for them for sure!
You can have BF's BB card if it ever does show up. Smiley Very Happy

I agree that Chase is way better, but I prefer BB to Circuity City, so I wouldn't give up my BB store card for ANYTHING! Smiley Very Happy
