BoA "Coins" Bonuses Discontinuing 2/25/2021

After logging in today, I had a pop-up messaging stating that the "Coins" bonus program is no longer being continued beyond 2/25/2021. I unfortunately did not take a screenshot of the message.

In case anyone isn't in the know, BoA let you get extra cashback for completing bonus offers (like the 5-30% cashback ones from Chase/Amex/etc.). Once you completed 4 offers, you got an extra $5 in cashback and move up to level 2. Complete 4 more, and you get another bonus of $6. You could move up to level 4 and get $8 extra cashback, for a total of $26 every 2 months.

I took advantage of this multiple times for the extra cashback. I currently am sitting at 2 coins in level 1 and hoping I can snag another $5 before 2/25. I've made $40 through coins, so it doesn't appear I ever completed level 2. I never get 8+ deals in 2 months for places that I typically shop.

Friend, do not gloat just yet. Wait for the possible increased "monthly maintenance fee" in upcoming statements. That in cahoots with other minor hidden upticks that may only cost us pennies per person, will offset this so called incentive program. Lest you slacked off a bit and forgot that banks don't actually reward anyone except themselves. 😉

Interesting.

I read your post and logged in myself and did not get any such popup,  or a warning that a popup was blocked.

I don't have any active coins at the moment however so that could be why.    Thanks for the heads-up.

Never managed to take advantage of multiple deals within a month so coins never benefitted me. I wonder if that's why they're getting rid of it. Could be annoying to maintain a system that isn't really used, especially if the main users are actually making money Smiley Tongue

That's my most likely guess. I can't get passed level 1 without shopping out of the ordinary or spending needlessly, and I won't spend needlessly just to hit that bonus. Sometimes it gets me to go to a restaurant I wasn't usually going to consider, but I would have been ordering out anyway for that occasion, so it isn't frivolous spending to me.

My apologies for not taking a screenshot. Hopefully someone else will see it and post some direct evidence.

I didn't get any such popup, but then I don't have any coins outstanding at the moment either.

It's so rare I get to use a deal, never mind 2-4 in the same month, that I don't benefit from the coin game anyway.  Though, according to my totals, I managed to earn $5 at some point.

I usually see better offers on my Chase cards and get to use deals more often over there than on my BoA card.

I've only used one BankAmerideal in the 5 years and never earned a single coin, so that may be why I didn't get the pop-up.  However I checked the BankAmerideals FAQ and it states-

Coins expire approximately every two months and you will restart at Level 1. Coin expiration dates through February 2021 are: Nov. 26 2019; Jan. 30 2020; Apr. 9 2020; Jun. 18 2020; Aug. 28 2020; Nov. 12 2020; and Feb. 25 2021 (note that expirations occur at 11:59 p.m. ET on each date). The Coins feature will be ending in February 2021. We hope you continue to enjoy BankAmeriDeals and look forward to bringing you additional reward opportunities.

The coin thing was always gimmicky to me. Unless you went out of your way, it was difficult to reach the coin earning threshold within the short timeframe they give. And going out of your way to spend is defeating the purpose of rewards, and all for a measly $5. I'm not shocked or upset the program is ending. It seemed designed to encourage unnecessary spending, which I realize is the goal of every rewards program, but this one was particularly bad IMO.

I never got any coins, either.  For some reason I always have a very limited selection of 4-7 BankAmeriDeals at any given time, and they usually aren't easy ones to use, at least organically.  Mine are usually more of the $10 back with Sam's Club membership (there are none in Massachusetts) or $5 back from TurboTax variety.

It appears they have extended the life of the Coins program slightly. The FAQ still says what @Aahz pasted above, but as of today I am seeing this:

Coins snip.PNG

The funny thing is, I had completely ignored these deals and coins until I saw this thread. I had a sense that none of the deals were ever for places I wanted to shop. Either I was wrong or that suddenly changed, because I effortlessly used three of them in the past few weeks at my go-to grocery store, Panera, and TurboTax. Having exhausted my organic spend opportunities, I then sought one more minimally costly offer to earn the Coins bonus. Oh, what's this? $5 back for spending $4.99 on Peacock TV! That fits the bill perfectly. So I'm now being paid 1 cent, or $5.01 if you like, to watch reruns of the Office.

Did they give this two-week extension to me because I'm special actively earning coins at the last minute? Or is everyone seeing the same 3/10 expiration date that I am?
